Democratic U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin warned delegates that "Minnesota is a tough state for us" and, despite President Bush's lagging poll support, "we will not win this November by default."
Instead, Feingold said in a morning keynote address, "we must stand up on principle and show people we are ready to run the country."
His prescriptions included guaranteed health care for all Americans, a "Manhattan-style project" for U.S. energy independence, withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq by year's end and "refocus on the real fight against terrorism." Feingold, a possible presidential candidate in 2008, also defended his call for congressional censure of Bush over warrantless electronic eavesdropping of U.S. citizens.
