WASHINGTON (AFP) - The White House mounted a rare, election-year counterattack at opposition Democrats accusing US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) of skirting National Guard duty during the Vietnam War. snip

Military experience has emerged at the heart of the 2004 race for the White House amid violence in Iraq (news - web sites) and the global war on terrorism, with candidates playing up their time in uniform as a barometer of their leadership qualities.

Two Democrats -- Senator John Kerry (news - web sites) and retired general Wesley Clark (news - web sites) -- have campaigned with veterans at their sides, and described in detail how they were wounded in Vietnam War gun battles.

Bush, 57, avoided combat in Vietnam by serving as a fighter pilot in the Air National Guard, but some Democrats seeking his ouster have revived questions about his attendance record.

2. Reich-wing radio is doing frantic damage control on this...

It's pretty scripted. Bring up Clinton, of course. Mention "honorably discharged" without mentioning Chimpy's actual service record, etc.

5. F-102 Statistics

Since it's so "dangerous" to pilot an F-102, I think we need to find statistics on how many guard pilots were killed in F-102 training accidents during the Vietnam war. That should put the issue to rest on how "dangerous" Bush's weekend warrior stint was.

Oh yeah, and they don't mention that he was transferred to a postal unit after he refused to pee in the cup. Maybe Bush was to afraid of dogs. Thats why he never showed up at his Alabama posting.

All this damage control will backfire on Republicans. They aren't answering any questions so the issue will keep festering. Democrats need to keep PUSHING this issue. If the press can make money by smearing Bushie, they'll have no choice but to cover it. Otherwise they'll get scooped.

6. He was in soooo much "danger"
...
Gillespie told CNN television. "And he fought -- he served in a very dangerous area, which is fighter jets."
...

A lot of danger involved in protecting Texas from the Vietcong.

7. Clinton did not serve
bush served dishonorably.

Suck on that minions. And after you get done sucking that, defend bush's insider trading actions while at harken. Eventually you'll suck your way to what your hero has done today.

That terrible sucking sound you hear is bush supporters gagging on his "legacy."

We have a pattern here folks. bush was scum, bush is scum and bush will continue to be scum until we end his reign and send him back to his poor neighbors in crawford.
