If this doesn't work out, they will need to fold their cards? Because, what else are they going to run on if not on Iraq? If they don't have war and fear, what do they have? They don't really want to run on the economy with the huge deficits. They don't want to put all their eggs in one basket with gay marriage or flag-burning. They need the "war issue". If this blows up in their faces, they will be standing on very shaky ground.

That is why Bush went to Baghdad. It is political. It is much closer to November than some peope may think. But that is always what Republicans are thinking about - the next election. They must make this succeed. There are no more cards in the deck.

2. Wrong. They've got the Ace back.
Karl Rove will be going at things full force now. And from past performances, the Dems aren't able to counter. I think things will be getting serious starting now.

3. No matter what they attempt, their hard core is only about 1/3 of the
voting public and may hover between 1/4 and 1/3.

There are going to be some among that 1/3 who will be too disgusted with this administration for some reason or another and who will not be able to vote for a Democrat - so they may not vote.

4. Correct, Americans will tune out of politics now between
now and the beginning of the school year in September. Here in DC, its a ghost town in August.

5. No more cards in their deck?
But maybe we are forgetting one thing. Republicans DON'T play by the rules... they DON'T play fair.....and the certainly DON'T use a standard deck of cards.

If there are no more cards (issues) in the "Republican deck". they will just create some more.

We can never assume that fairplay is part of their strategy. NEVER .
