Did Bush's surprise visit to Iraq help Iraq in some way?
I'm trying to figure out who was helped by Bush's visit? Who was it designed to help? Who was it designed to communicate with?

<snip>

Bush: "I traveled to Baghdad to personally show our nation's commitment to a free Iraq, because it is vital for the Iraqi people to know with certainty that America will not abandon them after we have come this far," Bush said in the radio address.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2006-06-17-bush-radio-address_x.htm

<snip>

Am I being cynical if I think that a visit by George W. (The W stands for Abu Ghraib) Bush would not help the new Iraqi government very much? I'm not sure a personal visit by Bush would be all that comforting to Iraqis, either.

Picture yourself as an Iraqi. You're sitting there in your home and you happen to catch the news during your eight hours a day of electricity. And there is W smiling and praising your new government. I mean that would scare the bejeezus out of me. I'd be thinking, "Great, just what we need in the middle of a tense situation. Some gasoline and matches."

But if the message of Bush's visit doesn't help Iraqis (as Bush suggests) and wasn't for Iraqis, then who does it help and who was the message for?

And your first two guesses don't count.

1. I believe it was designed to help Dimson's poll numbers.
Whether it did that, I doubt. I do not think it accomplished anything else either.
The only thing that comes to mind is the vast amount of $$$ it cost the American tax payer.

2. Bush ALWAYS thinks silly photo-ops will help....
Didn't that stupid ass learn from that ridiculous put-up carrier stunt that he won't get mileage for more than a couple of hours from these types of shtick?

5. What a macho he-man our President was!
Didn't you hear? He was able to sneak into Iraq without ANYBODY knowing about it! Not the press, not al Qaeda, not even the guy who's been elected President of Iraq three times in the last sixteen months. Wow! What a superhero Bush is!

6. If I Were Al-Maliki, I'd Be Intimidated and Annoyed
Intimidated that this bastard would walk in like he owned the country.

Annoyed that he came uninvited.

And disappointed that there wasn't enough time to give Dimson an appropriate official warm Iraqi welcome, fireworks and all.

7. There is no Iraq. Iraq is lost. What exists are streets, buildings
that are still standing, a traumatized population and guns. Oh...and the mere shell of a governmental body with no real power.

8. Bush went to Iraq to boost his poll numbers. Period.
The fact that Zarqawi had been killed just a few days before was a bonus. Turns out it was just another waste of taxpayer dollars since neither event gave him the boost he was looking for.
