Iraq Pullout Would Be `Disaster' for U.S., Bush Aide Snow Says
June 18 (Bloomberg) -- Most Americans would regard an immediate pullout of U.S. troops from Iraq as an ``unmitigated disaster,'' White House spokesman Tony Snow said, rejecting calls from some Democrats for the Bush administration to set a timetable for withdrawal.
Snow, appearing on three Sunday talk shows, said President George W. Bush understands that war ``can wear on a nation.'' More than 130,000 U.S. troops remain in Iraq, more than three years after the U.S. removed Saddam Hussein from power.
``Most people realize that simply pulling out would be an absolute, unmitigated disaster, not merely for the people of Iraq but the larger war on terror,'' Snow said on CNN's ``Late Edition.''
While 51 percent of Americans said going to war in Iraq was a mistake and
50 percent disapproved of how Bush has handled the conflict in a June 9-11 USA Today/Gallup Organization poll, only 17 percent said they wanted an immediate U.S. withdrawal. Thirty-two percent said the U.S. should withdraw in 12 months; 42 percent said the U.S. should take as long as needed.
