Another reason why the "D" matters
I know the minimum wage increase didn't pass, but it should be noted that all dems who voted, voted for it. That includes dems like...

Bayh (D-IN)
Biden (D-DE)
Clinton (D-NY)
Conrad (D-ND)
Feinstein (D-CA)
Landrieu (D-LA)
Lieberman (D-CT)
Nelson (D-FL)
Nelson (D-NE)
Salazar (D-CO)

and many others that don't get much DU love.

While the above senators often don't vote the way I like, they are much more likely to represent me than any republican. That's why I vote for my choice in the primary, but always vote for the democrat in the general election. I have yet to vote in an election where there isn't a noticeable difference between the dem and the repub candidates. If that day comes, maybe I'll change my tune, but for now, the D is always better.

1. I've been saying the same thing
But a lot DUer's won't see it. Most Democrats, even if they are moderate are good on these types of issues.

2. Some Dems have a tough row to hoe
Both of my Senators are Democrats, but the repukes are trying their best to take over Arkansas, and there is a strong fundy influence here. They have to be cautious, but can usually be counted on when it comes to populist issues like the minimum wage.

3. I'm perfectly willing to let local constituencies determine
whether or not they prefer conservative Democrats. I think Clinton and Lieberman are probably doing OK jobs for their yuppie heavy constituencies.

I just don't think they're going to translate well into national candidates.

I'm also not going to vote for my Dem senator. He's stabbed me in the back on too many important issues. I'm voting Green. Oh, he'll be returned. I just want him to know progressives are out here and we're not happy with him.

5. Minimum wage isn't a "sexy" issue
but it's an important one. I'd like to see more people fired up about it.

Even if this bill had sailed through, it would only guarantee full-time workers less than $300 a week. In 2006, I don't see how any one person, much less a family, can live on that.

But it didn't pass and those people are going to have to subside on something even more miserly.

Keeping the minimum wage low helps to fatten the coffers of 6 and 7-figure executives while giving them a double bonus of helping to create a permanent underclass to keep them supplied with workers with few other options.

6. "In 2006, I don't see how any one person, much less a family"
"can live on that."

Hence such a person or family would most likely be below the poverty level.
I hope everyone is paying attention to where republican's priorties are.

7. that there is no difference in the parties
is one of the myths that the repukes have been extremely successful in perpetuating.
