Media Bias: John Kerry vs. John McCain
This is one more piece of evidence that the media does not have a liberal bias. In 2004 John Kerry ran for President and the media could barely stop talking about how John Kerry seemed to have a nack for marrying rich women. Such a big deal was made about how Kerry could just use his wife's fortune to finance his political career. However, it was a different story when McCain ran for President in 2000. Until last night I had never heard the fact that John McCain had divorced his first wife, who had stayed married to him and raised his kids while he was a prisoner of war in Vietnam. According to an article at buzzflash.com, McCain divorced his wife for a 27 year old wealthy woman and then launched his political career. Actually, I had never known McCain was married twice and had a second set of kids. Maybe not knowing about McCain's past is my fault, but in the case of Kerry everytime their was a story about Kerry his marriages were brought up. It is very interesting to me what Republicans are allowed to get away with.

1. And they will keep getting away with it
if we don't call them on it. Any time you see or hear this kind of bias in the media...let them know. Even if it's just a quick e-mail. They need to know that we pay attention.

3. They don't care what we think or say...
They answer only to to the oligarchs who pay them to propagandize the rightwing memes.

2. It is even more interesting when you learn how that fortune of McCain's
was made! The tale of the old straight talker's fortune reads like a dime novel, albeit a gripping one.

5. Very true - especially when scandal in McCain's case would be
justified and where there was no scandal in either of Kerry's marriages. I really would prefer that personal life not be put under a microscope, but there is a real bias here.

Kerry's first wife was the twin sister of his best friend from Yale. They met when Kerry was a sophmore in college and married when he returned from college. Marrying a sister of a college friend is as conventional as you could get in the 60s. Although her family was wealthier, she and Kerry were part of the same elite class - he dated Jackie Kennedy's step sister the year before he met Julia. Kerry's own connections were impeccable.

They seperated at his wife's request when Kerry ran for Lt Governor. Kerry was the one who wanted to fix the marriage. His ex-wife has always said the reason was that she hated politics - which was understandable as the hate whipped up during Kerry's run for Congress led to rocks being thrown through the windows of their house. After a rock ends up about a foot from your baby's cradle, you might want to never be a political spouse again. It's clear she knew that they could not both have the lifes they each wanted and stay together. They worked very hard at jointly raising their daughters. Both us brothers were important in his campaign and her twin remained Kerry's best friend.

Kerry met Teresa four years after he was divorced. In retrospect, the Kerrys should have put more of a spotlight on how they met. It really answers so many Republican lies. Teresa was a non-governmental US delegate at the RIO environmental conference (aearlier "Kyoto"), selected because of her own work. They, along with a MA Congressman, went to a Catholic mass on the Sunday of the conference. It was at this converence that they became friends who were concerned about many of the same issues and later started dating and eventually married. Her sons clearly like and respect him.

McCain in his 40s, on the other hand, divorced the wife who single handedly raised their kids while he was in Vietnam and married a beautiful 24 year old heiress a few months later

6. Yeah, the party of moral values and they actually have none.
Look into Gulliani also- he is a real pig. Gingrich too. And, we all know how terrible Bush was to Laura until he stopped drinking.

8. Probably has something to do with resentment
toward Kerry for his heritage as well. Even when he was running for Congress, the press would come up with cartoons showing him in a country club and such, painting him as a rich elitist, even though his wing of the Forbes family was hardly rich.

10. Great observation - K & R
especially since certain quarters are pumping McCain as the republican presidential nominee for 2008.
