We need a new approach to suburban voters
The approach we've taken to suburbanites, especially white suburbanites, since 1992, has been enormously destructive to this country, and it has proven itself a failure in electoral terms.

We need to stop assuming that white suburbanites are always going to be motivated by their worst possible values(insularity, tight-fistedness, paranoia about crime, blind patriotism). Those who are motivated by such things will never vote for us anyway.

We need to recognize that the suburbs are becoming like the rest of America. They are becoming multicultural, they are becoming more open-minded, and they, like the rest of us, have the capacity to respond to an appeal to ideals and to hope.

We can ask suburbanites to believe in the idea of a better America, we can assume that they have souls and hearts and hate the war as much as the rest of us. We can reach them with the idea that crime can be reduced by giving potential criminals hope and the chance for a better life.

We don't have to stick with the approach of pandering to the suburban dark side. We don't need to give up our dreams at the city limits.

1. Opening a constructive dialogue
among the DU community could be a very useful step toward weaning
the Democratic Party (DNC, beltway denizens) off the polled and
researched-to-death, ineffective approaches fostered by "the consultants."
I think this needs a local or regional approach, managed by those who are
closest to it. The grassroots...US!
Thanks for the prod...
K&R, too.

2. We also should remember that many of US are of suburban origin
Which shows that suburban people don't have to have a limited perspective on life.
