Tom Tancredo happily holds up a T-Shirt saying "America Is Full"
Edited on Wed Jul-19-06 02:45 PM by Oreo
I don't remember seeing this posted here at DU.

Having recently moved from MN to CO I'm used to seeing a VERY active MN Forum and would love to see the same here in CO.

http://tancredowatch.blogspot.com/2006/06/tancredo-supporters-embarrassed-by.html

TancredoWatch recently received an email from "Tennesseeans for Responsible Immigration Policies," threatening a lawsuit unless Yours Truly removed a photo of a tousle-haired, wild-eyed, grinning Tom Tancredo hoisting a t-shirt with the offensive slogan: "America is Full."

The t-shirt is offensive because it puts the lie to Tancredo's claim that he's only concerned with ILLEGAL immigration. No, the truth is that Tancredo truly DOES want to dynamite those stirring words off the Statue of Liberty and close the American Dream to anyone else.

TnRIP is plainly embarrassed by the photo because they don't want it shown, even on a noncommercial, political blog such as this. They're afraid that it portrays Tancredo in a bad light, which it obviously does. In fact, while a "Google Images" search today for "America is Full" shows the Tancredo image twice, once on a TnRIP page and once on ColoradoPols, the TnRIP page is now gone: apparently deep-sixed in an attempt to sanitize Tancredo's image. Instead, you'll find photos of Tancredo looking much more responsible, including - ironically - one photo with Tancredo talking earnestly with a "legal immigrant" at a TnRIP meeting. (Was that legal immigrant aware of Tancredo's "America is Full" philosophy?)

It's hilarious that while supposedly concerned with protecting its own photograph, TnRIP has apparently taken the photo down from its own website.

7. Wrong
"Then he should just get the fuck out...
we'd all be better off for it."

Tancredo wants the illegal immigrants to "just get the fuck out"

Wages would rise, and American workers would "all be better off for it."

9. You truly back Tancredo on his immigration stance?
He wants to round people up nationwide and ship them out of the country.

13. I back his overall view of reducing illegal immigration
I back any legislation that emphasizes prosecuting employers for illegally hiring, and those who support such legislation. I back Tancredo's support of H.R. 4437. But better still, I back his support and co-sponsorship of H.R.98.

H.R. 98 mandates that employers verify Social Security numbers using a new, tamper-proof Social Security card with an electronic identification strip on it. (Which has not passed into law, but is still under consideration.) In general, it mandates that employers verify Social Security numbers using a new, tamper-proof Social Security card with an electronic identification strip on it. Verification is mandatory before an employee is hired. Failure to verify violates the law and will be prosecuted via civil or criminal statute.

Below is a copy of the Thomas CRS summary of H.R. 98.

"H.R.98

Title: To amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to enforce restrictions on employment in the United States of unauthorized aliens through the use of improved Social Security cards and an Employment Eligibility Database, and for other purposes.
Sponsor: Rep Dreier, David (introduced 1/4/2005) Cosponsors (57)

Latest Major Action: 5/12/2005 House committee/subcommittee actions. Status: Subcommittee Hearings Held.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SUMMARY AS OF:
1/4/2005--Introduced.

Illegal Immigration Enforcement and Social Security Protection Act of 2005 - Amends title II (Old Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance) of the Social Security Act to require inclusion of encrypted machine-readable electronic identification strips on Social Security cards.

Requires the Commissioner of Social Security to: (1) develop the strip in a manner that enables employers to access the Employment Eligibility Database (EED) established by this Act; and (2) transmit to the Secretary of Homeland Security necessary information from an individual's application for a Social Security card or number (as determined by the Secretary) for inclusion in the EED.

Directs the Secretary to establish and maintain the EED. Requires the EED to include data on the citizenship status and work and residency eligibility of noncitizens authorized to work in the United States.

Restricts access to EED information.

Prohibits individuals from commencing employment with a U.S. employer absent a Social Security card that meets the requirements of this Act and presentation of such card to the employer.

Prohibits employers from hiring individuals absent verification of identity and work authorization.

Authorizes the Secretary to: (1) assess penalties against employers who knowingly hire unauthorized workers or fail to comply with verification procedures; and (2) bring civil actions against those who fail to pay assessments or otherwise violate this Act. Establishes criminal penalties for such violations.

Mandates integration of Border Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint databases.

States that nothing in this Act shall be construed to establish a national identification card.

No way can anyone read that T-shirt without mentally filling in, "America is full of sh*t." It's too much a part of everyday conversation.
