I just thought yall might find this interesting. I attend Auburn University in Alabama. Last year, in December, we held our annual "Holiday Tree Lighting" ceremony on campus. However, conservative elements protested, claiming we ought to call the tree what it was, a Christmas tree. Bill O'Reilly and someone from Townhall.com who's too insignificant to remember his name took up the cause. This prompted Auburn's Student Government Association to form a Holiday Tree Lighting Committee to take a look at possible alternatives for this year to appease everyone.
The campus newspaper, The Plainsman, was reserved one seat on this committee, and the editor decline the seat, so it fell to the managing editor, Cliff. (I'm leaving out last names for the sake of those involved). Cliff served on the committee for about a month, even during an open student forum. Then, last Tuesday, Cliff was asked to step down due to a conflict of interest. See, Cliff is the President of the Auburn University College Democrats. SGA President, George, claimed that they were trying to keep politics out of the committee, and that's why Cliff must step down.
However, Cliff had succeeded in being politically unbiased, as he was representing The Plainsman instead of the College Democrats. The SGA executive claimed that there was the perception of bias, therefore it was necessary for Cliff to be removed. However, the plot thickens.
Kristy is on Auburn University SGA Senate. She is co-chair of organizations board, which can distribute and withhold O-Funds (SGA funds givent to student organizations). She has the power to influence whether organizations recieve or are denied charters, and if charters are to be revoked. However, Kristy is chairwoman of the Auburn University College Republicans. She has oversight on the College Democrats, College Libertarians, Auburn Gay/Straight Alliance, and Black Student Union. All of these are conflicts of interest where one might exert power over groups that they don't like. This has been mentioned to the SGA Vice President and President Pro Temp of the Senate, Annah. However, Kristy can be trusted with her power. She can be trusted not to abuse it, even though she has engaged in activities such as the Day of Truth (www.dayoftruth.org) which is in conflict with the AGSA's Day of Silence (www.dayofsilence.org).
Auburn University needs a universal standard to be applied. Should potential conflicts of interest be circumvented, or should people be given benefit of the doubt and dismissed only after proving their inability to preform their duties unbiasedly. Let Auburn University know and let everyone else know of the political discrimination here at Auburn. There are real attempts to, as the previous chairwoman said, "stamp out liberalism on campus." Do what you feel is "necessary and proper", and we're talking a Hamiltonian view of it. ;-)
