HOWARD DEAN...Your DNC Chair COMMITTED TO YOU! 50 States!
Dean's List
The Democratic chair plans to fight in every one of the 50 states. Is this shrewd strategy or a recipe for disaster?

By Dan Gilgoff

DIAMONDHEAD, MISS.--Here's what the front line of Howard Dean's revolution looks like: two dozen senior citizens seated inside this gated community's clubhouse listening intently as operatives from the state Democratic Party pitch them on becoming precinct captains. A rep named Jay Parmley approaches an oversize easel and flips to a page showing John Kerry's share of the 2004 presidential vote here in Hancock County. "28%" is scrawled in magic marker. "Kind of scary," Parmley says.

But he flips the page to show former Democratic Gov. Ronnie Musgrove's share of the vote here in his unsuccessful 2003 re-election bid: "43%." The discrepancy, Parmley explains, shows that the better Mississippians know a Democrat, the more likely they are to vote for him. Which is why he's here recruiting precinct captains. If Democrats can define themselves on a "neighbor to neighbor" basis, Parmley says, their candidates can win again, even here, in a red county in a red state.

If that doesn't sound revolutionary, consider this: Mississippi's Democratic Party hasn't trained precinct captains for more than a decade. Until recently, the state party consisted of a single full-time staffer. In 2004, the Democratic National Committee invested so little here that activists shelled out thousands of their own dollars to print up Kerry yard signs. That all changed last summer, when newly elected DNC Chairman Howard Dean began rolling out his "50-State Strategy," a multimillion-dollar program to rebuild the Democratic Party from the ground up. Over the past year, the DNC has hired and trained four staffers for virtually every state party in the nation--nearly 200 workers in all--to be field organizers, press secretaries, and technology specialists, even in places where the party hasn't been competitive for decades. "It's a huge shift," Dean tells U.S. News. "Since 1968, campaigns have been about TV and candidates, which works for 10 months out of the four-year cycle. With party structure on the ground, you campaign for four years."

The strategy is also a reaction to the past two presidential cycles, when the shrinking number of battleground states the Democratic nominee was competing in left no room for error. Both elections were arguably determined by a single state: Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004. Says Dean: "We've gotten to the point where we're almost not a national party."

But Dean's plan has helped feed a fierce intraparty battle between the DNC and the committees tasked with electing Democrats to Congress: the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. DCCC Chair Rahm Emanuel has been especially vocal to Dean over concerns that the DNC is misallocating resources in a year when the Democrats are poised to take back the House. Grousing about insufficient funds from the DNC, Emanuel recently told Roll Call "there is no cavalry financially for us." Emanuel declined interview requests, but DCCC sources say more money should go to Democratic candidates in tight races, not to field organizers in long-shot red states.

A big bet. With the future of the Democratic Party at stake, Republicans are watching closely, too. "Dean could wind up looking like a genius eventually," says a top GOP strategist. "Or this could be the election that could have been."

....from: Buzzflash.com..and they are looking for MONEY and WELL THEY SHOULD before you can read...the REST OF THE STORY!

4. He has come out several times agains DRE Machines...just recently
too! Did you miss "madfloridian's" post with Dean's statement about this?

He even appeared with Discredited Bev Harris where she demonstrated how the DRE's could be Hacked before Bev IMPLODED in her Pshychic Tragedy!

Dean is speaking out of the "side of the MUZZLE" the DLC imposed on him. Would any of us DU'er be able to deal with TAG TEAM ATTACK of SCHUMER and IMMANUEL on our BUTTS DAY AND NIGHT..NIGHT AND DAY?

And, throw in Bill and Hillary DLC and vast amounts of DEMS looking for GRAVY TRAIN if we Dems EVER get BACK IN POWER?

Dean has the TOUGHEST ROW TO HOE...he was selected by STATE DEM CHAIRMAN who had to LISTEN for the FIRST TIME to their Progressive ACTIVISTS who said: "We won't work for you anymore unless CHANGES ARE MADE AT THE TOP!"

Dean got through by a "hair." He knows this..but giving him GREAT CREDIT..he's managed to "walk that "hair line" and give us "Dem Progressive Activists" a little Bacon to chew on that's a really GOOD THING!

 Let's see how we do in Mid-Terms...given that Dean has had a really hard time with the Shrums/Braziles/Hillary/Emmanuel/Schumer/Flowers/..and others who entrenched in Dem or DLC MACHINE and have been losing elections for years! Without Clinton Charisma we might have been "in the wilderness longer," but Clinton's cock sort of sucked it for us all. Crawling our way back with honor and still "re-inventing ourselves" is more credit to the NET ROOTS than to the REST OF THEM...still working from an OLD/Outdated Script of what Dems should be when there Party has LEFT THEM at the STARTING GATE!!!!!!!

 Others of you may differ from my Lefty Perspective.

10. Not popular to post about Dean and the DNC here.
Kind of gets ignored. People have to pay up and do some work if we pay attention to what he is saying.

15. I love it because many don't like to "do stuff".
We have noticed locally that our DEC and DFA mailing lists tend to get lethargic about "doing stuff."

If there is food involved they are more likely to take part, thus the potluck dinner.

16. Not me, either.
I'm TOTALLY behind The Good Doctor. He has, pardon the cliche, the exactly correct prescription. It may not be an instant cure-all, but in the long run, it'll save the patient.

It's something we should have been doing YEARS ago, rather than sitting by, complacently, lolling around in our silently shrinking majorities in the House and Senate, until one day we rudely woke up to realize we were out of power everywhere and sneaky, slithering snakes like ralph reed and grover norquist and the think-tankers and the long-term strategists had taken over EVERYTHING. THEY started building from the ground up and look where they got. And the bad guys didn't get there overnight, either. It took them roughly 40 years, starting immediately after Goldwater got his clock cleaned in 1964, and then a booster shot after Nixon had to fall on his sword. They said "Never Again" and set about making that happen, systematically, over long months and arduous work in Small Potatoesville, AND BUILT FROM THERE. It may take us longer than one election cycle, too, because for them it didn't happen immediately, either. But they never gave up and kept their eyes on the prize. And as I said, look what they achieved. Dr. Dean has noted, already, the success of the ralph reed organization-type people, and what they managed to build. And he's looking to do the same for us good guys. And I think he's spot-on.

12. The party IS finally beginning to see the light on e-voting...
Just last week at the CDA convention I attended a speech by Nancy Pelosi in which she mentioned the urgency of ending voter disenfranchisement...I actually heard the words "paper trail" come out of her mouth. During lunch that day, Congressman Lacy Clay gave a speech on the same subject...I went up to him afterwards to ask about e-voting and hackability, and he was well aware of the issue and totally on board with fixing this serious problem. Afterwards we watched excerpts of "American Blackout" and had a panel discussion on what we can do. I have to say I was really surprised to see that our Democratic leaders are really beginning to take this issue seriously.

8. Its been a huge success in Ohio - Come to Cleveland Dr. Dean
I've never seen the party so energized and organized. The GOP had dried up all funds for Dems with their years of "pay to play" in Ohio. Dean's help from outside the state helped leverage a recovery. Ohio would not be doing as well as it is today w/o Dean's strategy.

20. There is a Matching Funds Program if you give to the DNC it will be
matched up until August. I asked the caller who the group was offering to "match funds" and he didn't know, though.

Anyway give to DNC before August 2nd and your donation will be matched.
