failure is overwhelming. Six years in office. Thousands dead. Deteriorating prospects.

Barring a miraculous reversal of fortunes in Baghdad, Sen. Byron Dorgan said yesterday on Diane Rehm's program on NPR that the Kurds, the Sunnis and the Shias are increasingly likely to create separate states out of "Iraq." Biden has has used even stronger language in this prediction.

Apart from the PNAC vampires, I haven't heard any ringing endorsements of U.S policy in the Middle East for a while now, even from Republicans, especially Republicans on November's ballot, and all this is before we get to Condi Rice petulantly refusing to call for a ceasefire in the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict.
