Lieberman: "I was hoping that God would send me a poor challenger"
After Sluggish Start, Lieberman Heeds Alarms
NYT
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/30/nyregion/30lieberman.html?ref=washington

<<snip>>

Christopher J. Dodd, the other Connecticut Democratic senator, stepped in roughly six weeks ago with his own political advisers to bolster a Lieberman campaign staff that associates said Mr. Dodd viewed as too inexperienced for a campaign that had become so difficult.

Mr. Dodd recounted telling Mr. Lieberman that he needed to embrace his Democratic roots — explicitly and repeatedly. Friends described Mr. Lieberman as indignant at the challenge from liberals to his Democratic credentials.

<<snip>>

“I want to assure you that I’m not surprised that I am in a fight for the Democratic nomination,” he said. “I always expected that I would have a primary challenge based on Iraq. I was hoping that God would send me a poor challenger. I am being tested with a rich challenger.”

He added: “Look, I could have told you this would be very close at the end. I know now it is very close.”

Democrats who have been advising Mr. Lieberman said that until the past few weeks, he resisted urgings that he change the way he talked about Iraq and play up other issues that appeal to liberals shaken by his support of the war.

The debate that was aired on CSPAN proved to me that he's got some rather serious character flaws.

10. I once visited a congressman's office
he had real masterpieces on his wall on loan from the National Gallery, this country with
the best intentions showers these individuals with perks and freebies. With the lobbyists
also showering them with gifts; I can see that after time; they think of their office
as theirs and the election an inconvenience.

23. How about forcing them to talk to their constituents
Edited on Sun Jul-30-06 08:54 PM by MissWaverly
to counteract the beltway mindset that they fall into after they arrive in DC.
There should be a way of giving them a reality check, yes, they should consider the common
good as well as their constituents; but the lobbyists are just that, 3rd parties. They
have to remember what their real duties are and who their real constituents are.

that he could have outspent with his incumbent advantage; and he would not have had to run on
his record.

And he is so smug and self rightous thinking God is going to direct him because he is chosen. What a spoiled fucking piece of work this guy is. I so hope he becomes a political nothing next year and no one will have to listen to his self-rightous pronouncements.

14. Help me Lord!!!
Seems to me the the Cup of Joe is getting cold, stale and desperate. Reminds me of the R.E.M. song 'Man on the Moon.'

"...are you losing touch?"

Several things struck me about this article. First of all, the opposition to Lieberman predates his support for war in Iraq by many years. Starting with his support for the GOP lynch job on Bill Clinton in '98. I find it completely hypocritical of him to try to wrap himself in Clinton's legacy now, since he greatly helped undermine it at the time. Then there was his role in the election of 2000. If he hadn't kissed Cheney's ass from head to toe during his 'debate' then he might be vice president right now. But he knew what he was doing, that's why he continued to run for Senate while at the same time running for the executive office. He knew his role was to help Bush win. Ever since, he has provided cover for the most corrupt and authoritarian U.S. administration in our history, and is proud of it. He is not a Democrat, he is the neo-con Lakud Senator from Israel.

To make the whole thing completely absurd, his advisor's are telling him to emphasize his stance on things like support for womens rights, the environment and blah blah blah. As if lamont is going to vote against those issues. This whole thing is a joke.

I can not help but wonder why Clinton is supporting him? Maybe he can help 'ol Joe the way he helped Gray Davis in California.

I've always been distrustful of anyone who thinks they are talking to/for god. He's a creep and always has been. I didn't really know about him until '98, but I've hated him since then. Lieberman was Gore's first huge mistake.
