1964: U.S. destroyer Maddox reports, falsely, it had been attacked by North Vietnamese torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin.

1990: Iraq invades Kuwait, after discussing plans with U.S. Ambassador April Glaspie.

1832: Sauk-Fox tribe, under a flag of truce, massacred at Bad Axe River in Vernon County, Wis. by Illinois militia. The State of Wisconsin apologized for the massacre in 1990.
