Lieberman's New Thug Strategy
Hail Mary Attempt #1: Lieberman's New Thug Strategy
by Matt Stoller, Thu Aug 03, 2006 at 08:54:16 PM EST

So I just tracked this down with several sources, and something really strange is going on. Lieberman's campaign seems to arming his supporters with aggressive talking points in order to pick fights at Lamont events. There were two separate events today where this happened. At a Machinists union endorsement event for Ned, some Lieberman supporters (probably paid) started arguing with union members, and a sign got torn.

Later in the day, Ned was ambushed at a diner stop. At 5pm, Ned was scheduled to stop at a cheeseburger joint in Meridan (Ted's Cheeseburgers). The burgers were really good, apparently, and the place is famous for delicious cheeseburgers. Mmm. As I write this it's dinner time.

Anyway, Lamont was going to the restaurant for a scheduled stop to do a meet and greet. The field organizer got there 20 minutes ahead of schedule. A bunch of Lieberkidz were already inside, but they were disguised because they weren't wearing their standard white T-Shirts. They were just sitting in the booths, in the smallish restaurant.

There were about 15 Ned supporters outside, holding signs and milling about. There were also some reporters, a photographer, and a bunch of journalists. Ned arrived at 5:05, and spent about 10 or 15 minutes outside before heading in to give a speech and eat a cheeseburger. He goes inside, and all of sudden the field organizer who was behind Ned heard a lot of screaming directed at Ned.

There were only four booths and six stools in the whole place, and they were basically all occupied. When Ned went in, all of the supporters ripped off their 'civilian clothes' and revealed their Lieberman T-Shirts.

4. I have to agree, if Joe did go that low it would be an unveiling.
I wonder though, if the Repubs aren't doing this. I listened to some of the McKinney debate and the Repubs backed her Dem opponent. It really would be so Rovian, to pull crap on our side of the aisle, desperation breeds contempt, didn't he bug his own office? Hey KKKRove, when you dance with the Devil, he eventually wants his due!

6. I've seen it before

On a local level I've seen Republicans back pro-war and/or pro-business dems when they know they can't win themselves. Of course, they aren't above surreptitiously funding a third party like the Greens if they think that will split the vote that way. They are supreme pragmatists, the ends always justifying the means.

7. Those punks at Ted's Diner...
...were undoubtedly some of the out-of-state College Republicans the Lieberman campaign is paying to canvass for them leading up to the primary. Sons of bitches.

3. just heard the clip of him on Ed Schultz earlier today
He sounded, in a word, nervous. The gist of his response to all questions was, "I'm a Democrat! Really I am! Believe me...a Democrat...yeah..."

So that is supposed to be good enough?

And he said that Lamont is spending his own money, (making him worthless, I guess...)

And he said he does feel like he's going to win. Well, what else could he say? He sure didn't sound as if he believes he's going to win.

16. I used to listen a lot, but not much anymore
I have developed a very short attention span. So what I do is check his website after his show is over and just listen to the clips of the people he interviews. That saves a lot of time, and a lot of listening to him go on and on about his own life. :boring:

5. Lieberman knows he's a washed out politician
Desperate times call for desperate meatures.

Once Lieberman is sacrificed, the anti-war candidates will be out of the woodwork.

As one blogger put it:

If these little Lieberyouth want to fight they should get their asses to the Recruiting Office of the US armed Forces.

Of course these little chickenhawks would never put themselves in a real battle.Just like Lieberman they would do anything Neccasary, including getting their wife pregnant, to avoid serving.

Joe Lieberman may be the only man alive with more deferments than Dick Cheney. He got 8 as an undergrad 4 as a grad student and 2 because he became a father.

12. It's gonna be a GOODNESS WHERE DO I START (D.R.)
kinda of 4 days. You have to understand that you are not taking on a Senator, you are taking on the DC Establishment and all the profiteers that go with that! There will probably be a last minute KKKRove tactic used to deter voters, but remember that PBS already showed the truth will win out.

OMG how horrible a candidate would not ask others to finance his campaign, Ned is a trailblazer and fingers crossed will tell the lobbyists to shove it where the sun don't shine.

I do understand your apprehension, but, it could be the orange revolution if things don't jive.

By the way, I do want to go on record, I don't think that JL is a bad guy, his priorities are just all screwed up, which leads him to make seriously bad decisions.

13. I used to share your opinion of Lieberman.
"I don't think that JL is a bad guy, his priorities are just all screwed up, which leads him to make seriously bad decisions."

But given his recent behavior and campaign tactics, I'm not so sure now. :(
