Union seeks to block PV Wal-Mart

By KEN HEDLER

The Daily Courier

PRESCOTT VALLEY The union local in Phoenix that represents supermarket workers is trying to overturn a Prescott Valley Town Council decision allowing a Wal-Mart supercenter.

Courier/Jo. L. Keener The site of the proposed Wal-Mart in Prescott Valley is seen looking south from Pine View Drive Friday. The Fry¹s supermarket complex is located on the south of Sunset Road.

"Protect Prescott Valley," under the sponsorship of Local 99 of the United Food & Commercial Workers, applied Friday in Town Hall to initiate a petition drive to gather signatures to overturn the July 27 Town Council decision. The council that day made final zoning changes to allow the Wal-Mart on 19.5 acres at the southwest corner of Lakeshore Drive and Glassford Hill Road.

The union group has 30 days from this past Friday to gather signatures from 518 or more qualified Prescott Valley voters to qualify the referendum for the town ballot next March 13, Town Clerk Diane Russell said. The 518 minimum is 10 percent of the voters who cast ballots in the mayor/council elections in March 2005.

The petition does not state the reason that the union group is trying to overturn the council decision.

However, Paul Ulan, a political consultant who is representing the union, commented, "The issue before the council is the rezone. We just feel it is important to let the voters decide whether it should be done."

Ulan continued, "You are right next to a neighborhood. A majority of the neighbors are opposed to the rezone."

2. I live 8 miles from where Walmart plans on putting this store
We already have 2 walmart super stores here and they are ruining businesses here that have been here for many years.
We need this store like we need a hole in our head. There is a store 4 miles away from where they want to put the new one.
We are a small town in Az and the last thing we need is another freaking walmart.
All this will accomplish is putting the other stores out of business. There have been several price comparisons done in this area by local grocerie stores that bought the same articles that they bought at walmart at a savings of less than 2 dollars. There clothes arent cheaper and neither are their prescriptions and yet people still get sucked in by these stores.
Of course the greedy people running these towns dont care, the one store in Prescott had new roads and other improvements done and it cost the tax payers over 8 million dollars .Since walmart is one of the richest corporations in the world why are we paying for their improvements???
They over work their employees and cheat them out of wages and yet they keep on building.
I say go to hell walmart!!!!!!
