Montana senator's tirade "Burns" firefighters

HELENA, Mont. -- Sen. Conrad Burns' verbal attack on a firefighting team for its work on a Montana blaze angered some firefighters, drew harsh criticism in newspapers and has left the Republican scrambling to repair the damage.

Burns, one of the most vulnerable incumbents in the fall elections, confronted members of a firefighting team at the Billings airport July 23 and told them they had done a ''piss-poor job.''

The Hotshot crew had traveled 2,000 miles to help dig fire lines and was awaiting flights home when Burns made his comments. The senator said he was expressing the frustration of ranchers who were critical of the way the fire was handled.

The report by the state Department of Natural Resources and Conservation said Burns pointed to one firefighter and said, ''See that guy over there? He hasn't done a g-- damned thing.''

He is a wounded critter and lashing out at anybody he thinks has to take it from him.

Was running ads earlier blaming DEMS and Liberals for making him look bad. When LTTE from Republicans started flooding in, that stopped. He has made his own bed and most folks around here know it.

He didn't show up at a debate sponsored by local newspapers because he was back east rubbing elbows with fat-cat out-of-state donors. Then he & the local GOP dared to complain that DEMS nationally are trying to influence the vote in Montana! :eyes: Can't be using that tactic when you are going out of state begging for money instead of facing other candidates on the issues in Montana! We can ask for help from out of state to fight Burns' out of state money. ;)

Burns is a fool or a crook, maybe both. But his pout & blame 'the Liberals' routine is wearing thin even among life-long Republicans here.

I've got a feeling that we're gonna be saying "Senator Tester" come January, and that's a very good thing.
