Poll question: gwb: "civil war this; civil war that"
Edited on Wed Aug-09-06 10:39 PM by welshTerrier2
this thread combines a poll question with a discussion question ...

Last week, Gen. John Abizaid, the Commander of the U.S. Central Command, raised the prospect that Iraq could be sliding toward civil war. Abizaid said, "I believe that the sectarian violence is probably is as bad as I’ve seen it in Baghdad in particular, and that if not stopped, it is possible that Iraq could move toward civil war." Gen. Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said, "I believe we do have the possibility of that devolving to a civil war."

asked about this at a press conference today, g. madman bush responded:

"You know, I hear people say, Well, civil war this, civil war that. The Iraqi people decided against civil war when they went to the ballot box."

on his Sunday show, Stephanopoulos asked c. madwoman rice whether Congress would have to reauthorize the Iraq war "if" a civil war broke out ... she said she would not answer hypothetical questions ...

you don't get off that easily here on DU ... here's your chance to answer the poll question ... and don't miss the discussion question at the end of this OP ...

The poll question is:

If it is widely recognized that Iraq is in a civil war and an Iraq War Reauthorization Resolution (IWRR) came to a vote in the Congress, how would you want your reps and Senators to vote? (assume the IWRR language basically authorizes bush to "continue supporting the Iraqi government and the Iraqi people in their quest for democracy and stability and that it is the will of the Congress that the US should not leave Iraq until the mission is accomplished.") ... Also, assume that a backup resolution would be voted on that would provide for the safe and immediate withdrawal of US troops "if" the "reauthorization resolution" did not pass ...

The discussion question is:

Is it logically consistent for someone to encourage their representatives to vote AGAINST the reauthorization but simultaneously oppose "immediate withdrawal" (defined as the fastest possible withdrawal that provides for the maximum possible safety of US troops)?

2. Ya s'pose if we sent over a bunch of blue and grey uniforms...
and other iconic visual stuff, and a Vivien Leigh look-alike actress in a hoopskirt and have her go and stand against a war-torn backdrop and speak some of the more well-known lines from Gone With the Wind...
he'll realize it really IS a "Civil War"? :sarcasm:
