CT Dem politicians have not asked Lieberman not to run!
Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 07:05 AM by femmedem
According to today's The Day (a New London CT paper), Senator Dodd and other elected Democrats are endorsing Lamont, but have not asked Lieberman to halt his independent bid and support Lamont.

snip:

While expressing “regret” that Lieberman had decided to stay in the race, Dodd said he had not called Lieberman to ask that he drop out.

“If Joe wants to talk, I'll be glad to talk to him about it,” Dodd said, adding that he planned to ask Democratic donors to contribute to Lamont's campaign.

Pressed on the same question, DiNardo said she did plan to ask Lieberman to quit the race. In the crush of elected officials behind them, no one else would respond to the question.

CT DU'ers: please phone Dodd today and apply pressure. I'll also be calling my State Senator.

Edit to add Dodd's phone #'s: (202)224-2823 (Washington)

1. Occur to you Lieberman has every right to run if he wishes?
If your boy Lamont is all that, he'll win out on the issues.

But if he's a one-trick pony who's out of step with most of Connecticut....

3. No, just pointing out facts
You know what facts are...those things you never seem to have.

as for me, I plan to give Lamont the same sort of rousing support DUers give to Democrats, like Rahm Emanuel, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Dianne Feinstein, and the DLC.

5. I will admit
"When you're right, you're right." He does have every right to run if he wants. Just like Lamont did, just like you or I do. If Lieberman wins in November then he wins, if he loses he loses. We'll have to see what happens.
But in the end, it's up to people in CT. I think Lieberman is swimming against the tide and I think he'll lose in the end. But, I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again at some point.
I supported Lamont in the primaries for a variety of reasons, the war was a lesser issue for me. I have worked for and voted for DiFi so I guess I'm a little more to the center than many here.

on personal note: I was thinking last week that I hadn't seen you in a while. I noticed a post from you yesterday (You were disagreeing with my analysis on an issue. Which is cool, cuz we have agreed before). I was hoping you hadn't quit and glad to see your posts again. If you were away "Welcome Back." If you weren't away, well..."Hi."

13. It would be great to hold on to the seats we have and pick up more
Now, thanks to the idiotic quest for ideological purity, what once was safe is now in play. I doubnt I'm alone in not seeing that as much of a victory for anything except suicidal tendencies.

I've slowed down here somewhat, but I'm still around. Good to see you too.....

15. Good God, you can't STILL be attacking Lamont's decision to run?
Face the facts, Benchers. Ct. voters wanted an antiwar Democrat to win the primary.
Lamont's candidacy couldn't have gone anywhere if he had no real support.

14. What makes you think Lamont IS out of step?
If he was out of step, would he have beaten a three-term senator in the primary?
Why should we assume that the LOSER of that primary is more in step than the winner?

4. Reid and Schumer didn't say a word in their public statement

"Joe Lieberman has been an effective Democratic Senator for Connecticut and for America. But the perception was that he was too close to George Bush and this election was, in many respects, a referendum on the President more than anything else. The results bode well for Democratic victories in November and our efforts to take the country in a new direction."

notice that they didn't say Lieberman WAS too close to bush; they said it was THE PERCEPTION ... and then they even went further by suggesting that Lieberman's loss was more a "referendum of the President" than "anything else" ... does "anything else" include Lieberman himself ... their statement could readily be interpreted to mean that in spite of Joe's commitment to "bi-partisanship", voters hate bush so much that poor old Joe, despite his good intentions, got caught up in the backlash ...

not one damned word about Lieberman's disloyalty or the damage his candidacy is doing to the party ... i guess you campaign with the leadership you have, not the leadership you want ...

7. I can't wait to beat Joe again.
Let him run. It'll be all the more sweeter when Lamont beats LIEberman twice in one year! :bounce:

8. I heard yesterday on Stephanie Miller's show that Dodd refused
to talk to Joe about not running, saying he didn't want to be the "go-between" between Joe and the Party just because he was from CT. Maybe Reid, as the head of the Senate, should be the one to talk to Joe, and then TAKE AWAY ALL HIS COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS UNTIL HE DOES WHAT HE'S ASKED.

What's wrong with this picture? Joe is sh*tting all over this Party and NO ONE with any sort of sway over him will talk to him about it.

9. Send in Bill Clinton
Remind Bill what he told Dean supporters -- follow your heart in the primary but follow your head in the general election. Bill Clinton needs to talk to Joe about not hurting the other Democrats in the general election, especially the 3 congressional candidates who have a great opportunity to take those seats back from Republicans this year and help the Democrats retake Congress.

10. I actually think ANY Democrat -- especially former POTUS, Bill Clinton --
who came out to campaign for Joe needs to tell him to back off now. EVERY SINGLE ONE. They gave him their best shot, but now they owe it to us to tell him to sit the eff down and just SHUT UP. He LOST.There's something not only unseemly, but WRONG when an elected official will not take NO for an answer from his constituency. It is utter lack of respect for the voters of CT, and for the Democratic Party, imo.

So, yeah... Bill needs to tell him, for sure!

16. it is his right under the law
As long as it's legal in CT for sore losers to regroup and get on the general election ballot anyway, he does have a legal right to run.

What should be challenged is the legality of his use of the term "Democrat."

That said, it is totally undignified behavior that is not in keeping with a statesman.
It is a shame that such behavior will be a part of his legacy.
