OK...So now we are afraid of 20 British born males of "asian" persuasion??
From our friends and their GREAT blog BLAH3.com

Whatever the reality of this, the resulting actions will be far-reaching…
A terrorist plot to blow up planes in mid-flight from the UK to the US has been disrupted, Scotland Yard has said.

It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled on aircraft in hand luggage.
Once again, watch this space.

Update:

While Sky News mentions that those arrested were ‘mainly young, British-born Asian men, no such mention over at Reuters.

However, Reuters ensures that padding it out with non-news and the obligatory mention of al Qaeda, the ‘British Islamist suicide bombers’ of 7/7, Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebanon, gives it a proper ‘background’.

Falling airline shares are also being mentioned, just in case.

Thank god for the Aero-News Network. At least they get it right in pointing at who's to blame:
Nearly 20 arrests have already been made, involving mostly British-born males of Asian persuasion.
Thanks guys...

Asian Persuasion?

WTF?

1. In this context...
...it basically means someone of south Asian descent - Pakistan, India, etc.

3. I don't think it would include Indonesia...
...but the term does seem to be somewhat malleable. It's most often used here to refer to people from the Indian subcontinent.

4. I was thinking the same thing however....
it's very rare to look at someone from any of the "Stan" countries and their neighbors and say "My he's Asian Looking". As far as I know, if someone is referred to as 'Asian' it's the assumption of someone who lives in the Eastern party of Asia - ie Japan, China, Philipines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, etc.

If the people arrested were of dark-skin with features similiar to someone from the Middle-East, the terrorists would have been defined as such.

11. In the US, true.
Not so in Britain.

It's a bit flexible, but mostly S. Asian, as opposed to East Asian.

Remember: Turks are Asian, Arabs are Asian, Koreans are Asian. The only reason Armenians aren't Asian and Russians aren't Asian is because somebody decided that the Urals and Caucasus were good enough for dividing continents. Silly, really. Indo-Europeans probably came from Asia.

12. Different terminology in the UK.
Here, Asian definitely means someone from the subcontinent or thereabouts.

6. Who do you think persuaded those Brits to be Asian?
At a very young age I was persuaded to be white. Is this a new mind game going on where Al Qaeda is going around to various countries where there are mostly white people and persuading them to become Asian?
