State Still Checking Lieberman's Petitions, Many Signatures Disqualified
snip>
City officials in Bridgeport and Waterbury said they have yet to review any Lieberman petitions. Waterbury Town Clerk Antoinette Spinelli said she was surprised because that city was "a stronghold" for Lieberman in the primary.
...
Shirley Surgeon, Hartford's Democratic registrar of voters, said she is verifying 59 pages of signatures delivered to that city's town clerk last week.

Although each petition contains room for 30 signatures, Surgeon said the majority of those she received contain about half that, and several have been disqualified.

"Out of 15 on this first page, nine were good," Surgeon said.

In Norwalk, Town Clerk Andrew Garfunkel said he received one petition page Wednesday.

Norwalk Democratic Registrar Betty Bondi said if the rest of Lieberman's petitions are as "sloppy" as that one piece of paper, his chances to make it onto the ballot do not look good.

2. Gee, Joe can't be trying to committ fraud could he? I mean,
he has shown no dignity or scruples so far. Would he dummy up the required number of signatures to get on the ballot? We all know his boy george would.

24. Or maybe the cousin of his web hosting service provider.
C'mon Joe you are a pro pol. You should know signatures have to be done by the pros or they don't get done right.

Oh wait, collecting signatures would be something that people advocating the will of the general public would be most likely to know about. I guess you can't be blamed, then.

9. Maybe Lieberman should take legal action if his petition is
rejected. He could always hire the law firm Dewey, Cheatem and Howe. :) I know it is a stupid joke, ripped off from Car Talk, but I couldn't resist.

11. Cleverness?
This is the type of gross incompetence wile cheating that must put Lieberman on Bush's short list for crony appointments.

By the way, now through the grinding wheel of prophetic history the label "Sore Loserman" really fits. But because the GOP does not want to resurrect it at a more accurate moment it is only for the edification of historians marveling and laughing during their research.

14. if he can't run Indie, can he run as a republican?
of course, that would doom any chance he has to win ...

and then if he's blocked as a republican, how about running as a Green ...

no, you say ... well, OK ...

then maybe he could restore the old Bull Moose party ... it's such a cool name ... that could work ...

or maybe the Tories or the Whigs ...

there's gotta be something out there for good old Joe ... i'm mean, he's willing to take anything ... won't someone please help him find his way ...

17. Maybe the same aid who set up his website was in charge
of the petitioning.
However, on any such petition to qualify a ballot measure or candidate, many are not valid. The trick is to get twice as many signatures as what is required.

Don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that (or a political scientist). do have to be smarter than the aid who set up the website.

18. From Westport: Many names "difficult to read", some signers not registered
Westport Town Clerk Patricia Strauss explained that it is up to town clerks in Connecticut to verify the registration of those on the lists at the request of the Secretary of the State. Thus, any Westporters on the Lieberman petitions would be checked to make sure that they are indeed a registered voter from Westport.

Many of the names are difficult to read and in some cases, it turns out that the signer hasn't registered to vote.

Edited on Fri Aug-11-06 04:25 PM by Bretttido
he may lose about 40% of the 18,000 signatures, but that will still be well over the required 7,500, unfortunately.

34. This isn't unusual. I went through this twice campaigning for friends.
As many as 40 % of our signatures proved invalid--usually not in the district.
