Gov. Richardson calls on Lieberman to step aside
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/08/11/lieberman.senate/index.html?eref=yahoo

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson became the first prominent national Democrat to call on Sen. Joe Lieberman to drop his independent bid for re-election in Connecticut.

Richardson, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association and a possible 2008 White House contender, called Lieberman "a good friend of mine" and a "true public servant."

But he said in a statement Thursday that he was backing Ned Lamont, the man who defeated Lieberman in this week's Democratic primary.

"I look forward to supporting Ned as he fights to help Democrats take back the Senate, and I call on Joe Lieberman to respect the will of the voters and step aside," Richardson said.

7. Thanks.
I've actually been here since 2004, but I lurk mostly. I also got sick of politics and didn't come around here much after shithead won the election.

2. Good for him
This is what all prominent dems should be saying. Hopefully we will hear more statements like this in the future.

6. I'm impressed
Richardson has always struck me as middle of the road, and if anything, too cautious. He deserves kudos, but what's up witht he rest of the Dems? If he can do it, why not Feingold, Boxer, etc.?

15. Tactics - better to have it come from the middle than the left
Feingold and Boxer are probably keeping quiet about it publicly but not privately.
Plus I thought I read Feingold has said he will contribute money to Lamont which even if he hasn't called for Lieberman to withdraw amounts to the same thing.

Actually Richardson isn't really the first for that matter. Dean had a letter yesterday as well saying the same thing.

19. LOL mtnester!!
Too funny!

I know what you mean though.. I usually tune in here too late to catch the deleted comments like that too, and it drives me nuts when I see a DU'er respond with something like...

"OMFG, I can't believe you said that!!!! Are you for real!?!? "

I'm like... OH ManNNnnnnnn.. what did they say??

The guy who was deleted by our on-the-ball Moderators had just created a brand spankin' new account today, and he was spewing off nasty, bogus, inappropriate and completely unfounded allegations about Governor Richardson.

I promise. This time you didn't miss a thing DU buddy!

Whoever the mysterious person was who was deleted got what they deserved.. They were crude, rude and completely out of posting boundaries.

11. This is the man my hubby wants to run for president, along with Wes Clark
he said he would take it either way prez/VP or vice verse.

Believe me, it is rare for him to voice such an assertive position on who should run for what.

Or was he one of the ones that "stopped just short of asking"?

There should be a groundswell of these pronouncements.

Waiting patiently. I'm sure with Liberman parroting the White House talking points, it will come eventually.

Didn't Dodd as much as say that Joe should pull out? I think others have, too. Their language is a bit soft, like "I regret Joe's decision," etc. But there are clear indications that they want Joe to withdraw.

17. He should be doing MORE than that, dammit
"I look forward to supporting Ned as he fights to help Democrats take back the Senate, and I call on Joe Lieberman to respect the will of the voters and step aside," Richardson said.

That's not nearly strong enough. Not only should Lieberman drop that outrageous splintering strategy. Lieberman should be working HIS ass off from now until November to help us take back the Senate. If Lieberman is in the mood for some campaigning, he should get to work helping the party win.

I guess the problem with that scenario is there is probably not a single Dem candidate this year that would want to be within 1000 miles of Lieberman.

As always, it is all about Joe.

20. Evan Bayh seemed to be ahead of all the pack on election night....
I nearly fell off my chair as he rushed out to cover his DLC-butt.

Really, his was the first name I saw on the front page listing of stories being posted....

22. That guy is nothing but a weasel
He never takes a position on anything without taking a poll forst. He is the perfect example of what is wrong with the Democrat Party today, why the Party has lost 7 national elections in a row. The American public wants LEADERS -- people who believe in something. The public does not require that their leaders always believe what the people believe. But they have no use whatsoever for a candidate who doesn't seem to believe in anything.

Bayh could very easily have made this statement before the election. "Joe Lieberman is a good man and a good friend. I respect his years of service and he has my unqualified supprort in this election. However, I am first a Democrat and I will support and fight vigorously for the man chosen by the good people of Connecticut."

How hard would that have been? A person has to be complete slime to not even come out with that until AFTER he sees the results. Bayh deserves no consideration for any higher office than he holds now, and if we could elect a Democrat with some backbone in Indiana, I'd be all for that.
