Poll question: Harry Reid: Wrong on Conyers?
Edited on Mon Aug-14-06 08:43 AM by reprehensor
Just plain wrong.

http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/viewpoints/articles/0813maceachern0813.html

...Should Democrats reassume control of the House of Representatives this fall, an increasingly likely event, they will not convene hearings focused on the possible impeachment of President Bush. Just ask any Democrat in Washington except the delightfully candid Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., whose lust for impeachment is almost refreshing.

"Impeaching the president is so far-fetched it's ridiculous," Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid told me last week while in Phoenix for Democratic Senate candidate Jim Pederson...

...But if Reid really believes that, once in power, House Democrats will be able to resist hearings of the sort that invariably morph into impeachment hearings, he's not paying attention.

For one thing, Pelosi can bark at Conyers now all she likes, but Conyers will become House Judiciary Committee chairman following a Democratic takeover. When that happens, Conyers won't need Pelosi's blessing to convene hearings...

I don't know about you, Mr. Reid, but I'm Living With War. A bullshit war fueled by Neocons, an oiligarchy and misplaced national prerogatives.

Is Neil Young more in tune with the national mood than Senator Harry Reid?

Let's Impeach the President

Let’s impeach the president for lying
And leading our country into war
Abusing all the power that we gave him
And shipping all our money out the door

He’s the man who hired all the criminals
The White House shadows who hide behind closed doors
And bend the facts to fit with their new stories
Of why we have to send our men to war

Let’s impeach the president for spying
On citizens inside their own homes
Breaking every law in the country
By tapping our computers and telephones

What if Al Qaeda blew up the levees
Would New Orleans have been safer that way
Sheltered by our government’s protection
Or was someone just not home that day?

Let’s impeach the president
For hijacking our religion and using it to get elected
Dividing our country into colors
And still leaving black people neglected

Thank god he’s cracking down on steroids
Since he sold his old baseball team
There’s lot of people looking at big trouble
But of course the president is clean

Thank God

3. I somewhat agree with Reid
Edited on Mon Aug-14-06 09:02 AM by LynneSin
I think it's going to be a massive uphill battle for what, Bush to get slapped on the wrist and told "Don't Do That Again". I'd rather that time be used to try and fix what has gone wrong with this country.

However, if we could get some republican buy-in, perhaps we could pull off an impeachment. But right now it's strictly partisan.

But my problem with Reid is he was kinda insultive with how he said "NO".

Jesus! It does not matter if it would be a difficult thing to do; It is the right thing to do. For Gods sakes, Bush has committed crimes, HUGE CRIMES! Why are so many weak in the knees on this? Just begin the F%$^&kin process and watch what happens. If we don't do it then watch your rights erode further. In fact good luck on getting an opportunity to vote for a president in 2008. Bush will remain in power. And before you call me naive think about the crazy things this madman has already done. Marshall law in order to cancel an election?... He wouldn't hesitate ...

7. Well we have many many other "Right Things To Do" first
Edited on Mon Aug-14-06 09:21 AM by LynneSin
I mean, should we leave our soldiers rotting in IRaq while persuing an impeachment? We have way too much on our plate that needs to be corrected where Democrats could make a real difference.

And answer me this one question.

Where will we get the 67 senator votes in order to remove him from office? (or is it 60, I forget the vote count for removal from office but it's not a simple majority). We'll be lucky if we get even 50 democratic senators this midterm let alone enough to actually force removal.

Even if we did do an impeachment, it'll be nothing more than what happened in 1998.

And question #2

So then you'll be fine with Dick Cheney as president? I mean, that's what'll happen when we remove him

8. Your answer was right in the middle.
"However, if we could get some republican buy-in"

That mentality is key to the issue at hand.

"What will they think of us?" Will this be fodder for Limbaugh?"

9. I'm not worried about fodder for Rush Limbaugh
I'm worried that alot of time will be spent with little results. We mustn't allow the impeachment to overwhelm everything else that needs to get fixed IF we get a democratic majority. Too much cleaning up to be done with the War top of the list and Minimum Wage right behind it

12. We can walk and chew gum at the same time. And frog marching the
modern day Richard Nixon out of the whitehouse gives Democrats a lot more ammo to get done all the straw-man you can muster.

14. I can guarntee you this - he will not be removed from office
Back during the Nixon administration, congress was nowhere near the partisanship between the two parties like we have today. It is not a simple majority to remove the president from office and we will probably not get enough republican senators to crossover to help us remove him.

16. But...but...it's so confrontational
and the Democrat (oops, sorry!) Democratic Party is already perceived as being negative. Let's keep a SMILE on our faces--and with politeness and respect for those in political office, work toward the big bright future where Republicans will realize the errors of their ways!

6. Reid has always been a moderate
He will not lead the cavalry. I do not believe impeachment would be the right course. We would need to prove everything the president did wrong to the people first then we can get the people on board. This will take time & may back-fire for the 08' elections. We need our new congress to start putting right all the wrongs. Repel the tax cuts. Sort out medicare. Lets start looking at a viable alternative to the Bush plan on social security. Have oversight committees for everything he has done wrong. I know most of you do not agree. But we really need a congress who slow the coming recession to not being an all out "great depression" repeat. That has got to be their first priority.

10. I was thinking of what is the most important issue if we get majority
and the answer: Energy costs.

Seriously, tackle that first, bring gas down to around $2-$2.50/galleon or even less and I guarentee we'll have Americans on our side wanting to support the changes that democrats want to make.

11. From a practical standpoint he is absolutely correct...
Even if we take both houses in 2006...which is extremely unlikely, there is no way enough Republican support will be forthcoming to even come close...

Democrats are going to have a very narrow window to begin dismantling some of the more harmful of the Republican policies initiated during the last 6 years...if the first thing we do is start impeachment hearings all of that will get bottled up in a partisan war...

17. First thing dems should tackle: Energy Costs
You want want to win the hearts & minds of the American people and get them listening to your policies, then you need to go after the one thing that affects them the most - their pocketbooks. And with gas over $3/gal and electricity bills skyrocketing, going after Energy Companies that are gouging americans at the pump & light switch should be done first.

And the reason is simple - once we get gas back to around $2/gal and electricity bills down to normal, Americans will start to listen to what democrats have to say.

And they can do it too - it was the Senate Democratic Majority that tackled the California Energy Crisis and found that companies like Enron were jacking up the prices because of a loophole in the Energy policy (created by a republican). We got the Majority, Gov't Affair Committee decided to investigate it (spearhead ironically by Joe LIeberman) and the prices went back down to normal.

13. Basically, our form of government doesn't work at all. We are completely
captive to a political Party who can commit any form of crime they desire and because of our flawed political system, there is not one damned thing we can do about it.

So much for that much heralded Constitution and democracy...blah, blah, blah...just words.

18. Reid is playing the polls
If you propose Congressional investigations so that all Americans can learn what's been going on, most people are in favor of that. When you talk about impeachment, people think of the proposition as a foregone conclusion of guilt, and not an investigation or trial. Reid is ruling out impeachment so that we don't lose midterm votes over the issue. If investigations reveal what I think they will, it would perhaps be appropriate to have a "This changes everything" moment, and I believe most voters would agree at that point.

Regardless, it is critically important to conduct the investigations and let everyone know the truth. Things will sort out after that. Retribution in one form or another, or perhaps in many forms, will occur after that.

19. Reid may be trying to stop the Repubs from rallying their base
over a Bush impeachment, so they don't go out and vote against Dem's.
