Rep. Harris Condemns Separation of Church, State

By Jim Stratton
Orlando Sentinel
Saturday, August 26, 2006; Page A09

ORLANDO, Aug. 25 -- Rep. Katherine Harris (R-Fla.) said this week that God did not intend for the United States to be a "nation of secular laws" and that the separation of church and state is a "lie we have been told" to keep religious people out of politics.

"If you're not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin," Harris told interviewers from the Florida Baptist Witness, the weekly journal of the Florida Baptist State Convention. She cited abortion and same-sex marriage as examples of that sin.

Harris, a candidate in the Sept. 5 Republican primary for U.S. Senate, said her religious beliefs "animate" everything she does, including her votes in Congress.

Witness editors interviewed candidates for office, asking them to describe their faith and their positions on certain issues.

Harris has always professed a deep Christian faith. But she has rarely expressed such a fervent evangelical perspective publicly.

Political and religious officials responded to her published remarks with outrage and dismay.

and slinks off to obscurity forever (or a nice, restful stay in an exclusive private loony bin). She's even more fun to watch than Alan Keyes.

I agree with the above poster; I'm sorta gonna miss her when she's gone. At least she's good for a laugh .

16. K. Harris just insulted my religion (Hindu) by those statements....
For her information, hinduism was around for 2 thousand years
before christ was even born. I don't know of any hindu who
operated gas ovens, dropped nuclear bombs on cities, or bought
slaves from Africa.

18. And Diebold voting machines, owned and controlled by Bushites
(Diebold until recently headed by CEO Wally O'Dell, Bush-Cheney campaign chair and major fundraiser, who promised in writing to "deliver Ohio's electoral votes to Bush-Cheney in 2004"), run on TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code, with virtually no audit/recount controls, will tell you that this twisted 'christian' menace and anti-american treason and bigotry has been approved by voters, who like to have their government treasuries looted, who love seeing the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, who revel in the bombing and torture of Muslims, who want to see gays strung up, who hate brown immigrants, who approve of black voters being purged off the voting rolls, and who think the Constitution is a communist/Arab/Jewish conspiracy.

That's how nuts Diebold's (s)elections of those who will rule over are.

It's VERY IMPORTANT to know what's going on here. You are not being to asked to be convinced of this dangerous drivel. You are being brainwashed into believing that it is ACCEPTABLE political discourse, and that a majority of OTHER American voters could approve of it. Thus, your own views on the separation of church and state, on religious and racial tolerance, on good government, on ethical government policy, on fairness and equity, begin to seem like minority views to you, and YOU begin to feel isolated and alone, and powerless.

Secret vote counting is fascism and tyranny. The vast majority of people would NEVER choose fascism as a form of government. It can only be imposed. And it is a government of lies and deceit--and has very often in history been a government that uses religion, particularly 'christianity,' to brainwash the poor into expecting a greater reward in heaven and thus to forget their just demands for equity, fairness and civil rights on earth.

It is too easy to ridicule these Harris statements--and to miss the insidious combination of outrageous ideas and Diebold/ES&S enforcement. Don't be distracted by the seeming idiocy. Look to how and why she dares to speak it.

ES&S is the other chief tool of this subtle fascist coup. It is spinoff of Diebold (similar computer architecture), initially funded by rightwing billionaire Howard Ahmanson, who also gave one million dollars to the extremist 'christian' Chalcedon Foundation, which touts the death penalty for homosexuals (among other things). Diebold and ES&S have an incestuous relationship; they are run by two brothers, Bob and Todd Urosevich.

These are the people who "counted" 80% of the nation's votes in 2004, under a veil of corporate secrecy. They are even more entrenched now--most especially in Florida, where Bush's fascist brother protects this election theft system, and where, in many areas--with Diebold/ES&S touchscreen voting--there is no paper trail and not even the possibility of an audit or recount, and where all voting is controlled by TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY vote "tabulation," owned by rightwingers and religious nuts.

What Thomas Jefferson did, in addressing the grave problem of religious wars that had plagued Europe, was to construct a MECHANISM OF POWER to defeat religious war HERE. And we must take a similar PRACTICAL view. It doesn't matter what these foaming-at-the-mouth religious nuts SAY. CURTAIL THEIR POWER. Find the PRACTICAL WAY to do that. He helped construct a SECULAR Constitution with specific prohibitions against state-imposed religion, and sufficient dispersed power to prevent demagogues--who are almost always religious nuts--from gaining power to impose their views on others. The prevention of religious war and religious tyranny is central to the Constitution. Religion had, for centuries, been used to foment pogroms, inquisitions, witch-burnings, tribal war, strife, division, torture and bloodshed. It had been the favorite tool of tyrants for a thousand years. Jefferson & Co. set out to ban it from our shores, by specific constructions of Constitutional power, balanced among the executive, the peoples' forum, Congress, the Supreme Court, and the population of voters.

We have that Constitution as our fundamental barrier against religious tyranny. But it needs to be bolstered by TRANSPARENT VOTE COUNTING and associated guarantees of majority rule, lawful conduct in government and protection of minorities.

TRANSPARENT VOTE COUNTING, and its guarantee of majority rule MUST be restored--or the Constitution means nothing, and our democracy is OVER. IF we had TRANSPARENT VOTING COUNTING, dangerous idiots like Harris would have no forum. She would be laughed off the public stage.

How to restore TRANSPARENT VOTE COUNTING--voting counting that all can see and understand? And how to do it before it's too late?

One idea is massive Absentee Ballot voting this fall. I don't know the rules in Florida, but most states have some form of Absentee Ballot voting. Generally, AB votes are NOT "safe" either--and will NOT produce accurate vote counts this November--but, if enough people vote AB (and many are--it's up to 50% in Los Angeles)--if, say, all voters who despite the Bush junta (70% or so) vote AB, and FLOOD election officials with MOUNTAINS of paper AB votes to deal with--we can create sufficient panic and crisis in the election theft industry, to FORCE local/state election officials to the table NOW, with demands for TRANSPARENT VOTE COUNTING, and salvage the '08 primaries and general election.

The AB voting protest has many things to recommend it. If it's massive--and it has every chance of being so--it will amount to a citizen "vote of no confidence" in this rigged system, and FORCE reform. It will also help turnout. It turns voting into an active protest, rather than passive act of despair. It's a motivator. Sheer turnout can overwhelm the rigged machines in some cases.

The machines ARE the problem! Bust the machines--Vote by Absentee Ballot this November!

23. Is she actually stupid?
It may be that she is playing to the Fundie base that believes this shite. If she loses the Primary, she will probably do a Lieberman. If she loses that she will have a prosperous career with a Fundie organization. She may seem stupid and wak to most Dems and Progressives but probably not to her core group of RW Zealots.

26. They can't win with their base, so why does she spout this fundie shite?
It's because she has guaranteed (s)election, via Diebold and ES&S. America generally filters out extremists through a process of TRANSPARENT elections, the public vetting of various ideas/people, and majority rule. Why isn't extremism being filtered out any more? Why do assholes like Harris EVEN HAVE A PLATFORM?

This is not political discourse. This is FASCISM--imposed by SECRETLY PROGRAMMED voting machines, owned and controlled by BUSHITE corporations.

wasn't married in their seats in the House while someone was debating a bill? And what do you want to bet that the bill be debated, if it helped corporations and hurt the sick, the poor, and working families, she voted for it.

How is that Christian?
