Church votes out 12 year old boy from attending servicesA thumbnail of the story is that an all white Baptist congregation voted to ban a 12 year old biracial kid for fear the black side of his family might want to enter their lily white enclave. In the fallout, both the pastor and a prominent congregant resigned from the church.
What does this have to do with Jim Webb's campaign? A lot, I think. Racism is not held in high esteem on any wide basis. That is not to say it doesn't exist and that is not to say that there aren't many more closet racists than there are overt ones. But America is in a place where overt racism is simply intolerable.
There have been hints at overt racism that have dogged Senator Felix for years. But the macaca tape is extraordinarily clear evidence that he is a racist. Some say it will earn him a few votes among the toothless, knuckle dragging crowd. That may be. But it is my view that those will be more than cancelled by the loss of votes by people who are truly offended by his words and actions.
Senator Felix is a racist.
America is far less tolerant of racism than she once was.
In the balance hangs Senator Felix's reelection hopes. The scale will tip away from him.
