Dems looking really good to pickup Senate seat in RI ...
Edited on Thu Aug-31-06 05:24 PM by welshTerrier2
a poll last week showed Lincoln Chafee, the republican, with a razor-thin lead over Rhode Island Democratic Senate candidate Sheldon Whitehouse ... this article showed Chafee ahead of Whitehouse 43% to 42% ...

but not so fast there ... it looks like Chafee, a "third way" republican, may not be doing so well in his own primary ... if Laffey, the conservative republican wins the primary, RI looks like a definite pick-up for the Democrats ...

source: http://politicalwire.com/archives/2006/08/31/in_rhode_island_poll_shows_chafee_headed_for_defeat.html

In Rhode Island's U.S. Senate primary, Stephen Laffey (R) is poised to defeat Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-RI) in the Republican primary, 51% to 34%, according to a new Rhode Island College poll.

Says pollster Vicgtor Profughi: "Since early summer, Senator Chafee has been unable to expand his base of support from roughly one third of the likely Republican primary voters. The Lieberman phenomenon, where a partisan base closes ranks around the ‘true partisan’ candidate, seems to be at work in Rhode Island, as it was on the Democratic side in Connecticut. Laffey’s efforts to link Chafee with the extremely unpopular President Bush also appear to be paying off."

2. Just as I was reading this...

My phone rang and it was a recording from Chafee. Three out of the four registered voters in my house are unafiliated. I expect quite a few phone calls like this over the next two weeks.

I can't wait for the 12th. I really think Laffey's going to win. Fingers crossed!

The reason I think so is that Chafee relies on Democrats and Inds to win. He's not going to get their votes.

Laffey supporters are the 22% of Rhode Islanders who think Bush is a swell guy. Backwash.

4. Oh, why do the Republicans want the terrorists to win? *wrings hands*
After all, they told us that when Connecticut voters booted Joe in the primary, they were enabling the terrorists. Surely the same rules apply here? ... The Republicans wouldn't be inconsistent, would they? :eyes:
