Talked to Scholastic....lady has only had one call about Path to 9/11
Edited on Wed Sep-06-06 06:11 PM by madfloridian
They are a good company whom I used frequently when I was teaching. She knew nothing about it, but is passing it on to the NY office.
She was concerned, and very appreciative of my call. I said it would only take a couple of people not paying attention for a company to get involved in such. She agreed.
I found this contact info at Kos:

2. I e-mailed them
and how about contacting teachers unions too? Shouldn't they be making teachers aware of what their children are being presented with? A sort of warning label, and if teachers wrote to Scholastic they couldn't ignore it.

4. I remember a skinny magazine called "Junior Scholastic"
when I was a kid in the '60's.

They had "fair and balanced" coverage of the controversy
about the Vietnam war. They had two spokesmen for the war.
They had only one against the war. He had a beard, and
the caption noted that he had achieved some notice for
expressing Nazi views.

8. They have all grade levels as well.
I have not seen any since I retired. I think many companies have been pre-empted by the Bush administration cronies.

6. They are sending out lesson plans to high school teachers.
I don't have the link readily available, but I gave it to the lady. I will see if I can find it.

They don't expressly "promote" it, but they encourage viewing as though it were a realistic representation.

13. I got a response.
Your email regarding the 9/11 Classroom Discussion
Guide created by Scholastic was forwarded to me, and I am pleased to
respond to your concerns. Once the materials are posted online, you will
be able to access the complete discussion guide at
www.scholastic.com/pathto911, and I hope you will take time to review
the content for yourself.

Scholastic does not take a position regarding the ABC miniseries, "The
Path to 911." What we have done is to create a Classroom Discussion
Guide for high school teachers with content that is balanced, fair and
open-ended. Two of the key objectives of the guide are "to engage
critical-thinking and critical-viewing skills" and "to remind students
to view what they absorb from the media with a critical eye." We trust
that teachers will take the information we provide and encourage their
students to evaluate the content of the miniseries against these facts
and other resources and research that are available to them. These
materials are provided free of charge to teachers in grades 9 to 12 who
can choose whether or not to utilize the lessons in their classrooms.

Scholastic appreciates hearing from teachers, parents, and others who
use or evaluate our services. Your comments will be shared with our
editorial staff who continue to seek to improve the quality of the
materials we create for use in schools and homes. Please review the
content of the 9/11 classroom guide when it is posted online and
consider the opportunity it offers for developing critical thinking and
relevant, timely discussion among high school students who have grown up
in the post-9/11 era.

Sincerely

Kyle Good

Vice President, Corporate Communications & Media Relations

Scholastic Inc.

26. What does this showing a fictional movie have to do with:
"to remind students to view what they absorb from the media with a critical eye?"

I mean, what the fuck? What does a "docudrama" have to do with the real media coverage? If it's real, show real footage of the time. Don't recreate shit that didn't happen and film it as fact.

19. Just called the first number up there
There is a recorded message saying that, due to the large volume of calls on the ABC program.....blah,blah, blah....
They say that they are not taking a stand, merely producing educational materials and discussion points to help students develop critical thinking skills.
Believe me, critical thinking skills are the LAST thing the Repukes want the next generation of students to have.

I blasted them (via voicemail).

24. I bet they started to get other calls, and pulled it...
I know that I've called ABC previously and not had the trouble I did today. I was transferred to dead lines, cut off, disconnected, etc. When I did get a line, it was voice mail with a 30 second limit. :eyes:

Thanks for the link--I'll get in touch with them tomorrow! :)

23. I am telling them that if that airs in my son's class, I'm pulling him
I will pull my son out of that school and protest that video rather than let my son be brainwashed by such a blatant rewrite of history.

Our history books are bad enough (Please read "Lies My Teacher Told Me" by James W. Loewen) but this is recent and can be stopped right now.

I am writing Scholastic to say the same.
