(POTUS '08) Warner beats Allen in Virginia
Edited on Tue Sep-12-06 01:10 PM by underpants
So maybe Mark should have ran for Senate....nah he wants to be President.

_____
Democrat Mark R. Warner stands a better chance of carrying his GOP-leaning home state as a presidential candidate in 2008 than Republican George Allen, The Times-Dispatch Poll shows.

Fifty-six percent of Virginia voters would consider backing Warner, a former governor, if he were the Democratic nominee. Thirty percent would oppose him, and 14 percent were undecided.

If Allen, a U.S. senator in a close race for a second term, were the Republican candidate, he would pull only 39 percent. Fifty-two percent would vote against him, and 9 percent were undecided.

However, the latest Times-Dispatch Poll -- conducted Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday shows expectations building for a Warner candidacy, while sentiment for an Allen run has fallen.

The poll was conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. of Washington. Based on phone interviews with 625 registered and likely voters, the poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

3. Careful now
VuhGinyans LOVE theyah history*

*even if that "history" moved here with his family when he was a sophmore in college and is still living off the fact that his father was the coach of the local football team (note that team is actually not located in the state in question).

4. I am a Virginian, and I love that Allen will be history.
Not as much as I wish he had never been part of VA history.

9. The Land That Time Forgot
Ever notice that all the houses are the exact same tired colonial style, filled with depressing ornate colonial furniture? It's a big time capsule.

The subject line is from my brother, an architect who graduated from UVA, referring to VA architecture. It's Jefferson's UVA replicated mindlessly by the millions.

Jon Stewart at Wm.&Mary a few years ago

I am honored to be here and to receive this honorary doctorate. When I think back to the people that have been in this position before me from Benjamin Franklin to Queen Noor of Jordan, I can’t help but wonder what has happened to this place. Seriously, it saddens me. As a person, I am honored to get it; as an alumnus, I have to say I believe we can do better. And I believe we should. But it has always been a dream of mine to receive a doctorate and to know that today, without putting in any effort, I will. It’s incredibly gratifying. Thank you. That’s very nice of you, I appreciate it.

But today isn’t about how my presence here devalues this fine institution. It is about you, the graduates. I’m honored to be here to congratulate you today. Today is the day you enter into the real world, and I should give you a few pointers on what it is. It’s actually not that different from the environment here. The biggest difference is you will now be paying for things, and the real world is not surrounded by three-foot brick wall. And the real world is not a restoration. If you see people in the real world making bricks out of straw and water, those people are not colonial re-enactors—they are poor. Help them. And in the real world, there is not as much candle lighting. I don’t really know what it is about this campus and candle lighting, but I wish it would stop. We only have so much wax, people.

5. It is pretty sad
He got to be governor and now Senator simply because his dad was the football coach.

6. I think I'd take a real close look at Virginia's voting system, if I were
Warner. (Thomas Jefferson is no doubt turning over in his grave about it right now.) ("Sir, did you say that you have private corporations counting all the votes inside some new electrical magic box that no one is permitted to examine? You are pulling my leg, sir!")

8. 8%
IT will take an actual 8% win in Va. for Webb or anyone else to claim a victory.

W supposedly won by 8% in '04 even though the polls were within 2 for months and the exit polling had it about dead even (remember the delayed call on Va. and Miss.?)

10. I think 8% is do-able.
I just hope the media don't fake the early polls to soften the blow.
