FLASHBACK 1 month - GOP Plans to "Get Personal-Dig Up Dirt" on Dems
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 08:27 AM by beaconess
The next time someone complains that the Foley coverup is being used against the GOP for political purposes, remind them that just last month, Tom "Promise Not to Do It Again, Give Us $100,000 and We'll Leave You Alone" Reynolds proudly crowed that the Republicans were going to get personal and dig up dirt on their opponents:

In a Pivotal Year, GOP Plans to Get Personal;
Millions to Go to Digging Up Dirt on Democrats

Washington Post, September 10, 2006

Republicans are planning to spend the vast majority of their sizable financial war chest over the final 60 days of the campaign attacking Democratic House and Senate candidates over personal issues and local controversies, GOP officials said. The National Republican Congressional Committee, which this year dispatched a half-dozen operatives to comb through tax, court and other records looking for damaging information on Democratic candidates, plans to spend more than 90 percent of its $50 million-plus advertising budget on what officials described as negative ads.

The hope is that a vigorous effort to "define" opponents, in the parlance of GOP operatives, can help Republicans shift the midterm debate away from Iraq and limit losses this fall. The first round of attacks includes an ad that labeled a Democratic candidate in Wisconsin "Dr. Millionaire" and noted that he has sued 80 patients.

"Opposition research is power," said Rep. Thomas M. Reynolds (N.Y.), the NRCC chairman. "Opposition research is the key to defining untested opponents."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/09/AR2006090901079.html

The Dems are just "defining" Foley, Hastert, Reynolds, Boehner and the rest of them as the hypocrites they are.

4. And they've been busy little devils in WI.
The RNCC has been running attack ads against the Dem candidate for congress, attacking his medical practice for suing patients for non-payment. They call him "Dr. Millionaire Steve Kagen."

Right. Like they wouldn't do the same thing. :eyes:

36. The RNCC is doing that in Iowa as well
They are currently running an ad insinuating that Democratic candidate Bruce Braley is a Communist. They really have no evidence except some organization's declaration that Braley is a...gasp! peace candidate. Braley and his opponent are debating here in town tonight and I plan to ask opponent, whose name I will not say here if he is ready to renounce those ads.

I fear, especially given the players, that there is more coming in Page-gate. My guess is that more people will be exposed. ABC is hinting at it. The outrage across the board (the republicans are quick to condemn) has me suspect--I am waiting for the other shoe. I fear there will be democrats under it.

17. Good Gawd, I certainly hope so. Let's call it shot #2
Shot #1 being The Big Dawg's interview on Faux.

My advice to the Dems:

1. Have a team ready for air to rebut and renounce every lie right away. None of that Gentleman John crap. None of that above the fray bullshit. Hit back hard with the facts.

2. Go negative. Do it now. Not in the Rovian, Swiftboat, throw a bunch of lies at the wall until some of them stick kind of way. No, you need to do it the way the GOP can't do it - truthfully. Just start telling the no-holds-barred truth about the slimebuckets on the other side of the aisle and don't stop.

Let 'em whine and moan and pule. Let 'em make self-righteous declarations that the level of discourse is sinking. Who cares? Because I'm here to tell you that all the hue and cry over negative ads and "whither America?" is 90% bullshit. People say they hate 'em, but they buy 'em. Negative campaigns work.

YES. We HAVE TO hit back. ABSOLUTELY. And YES, go negative. They leave us no choice - at least, if we want to WIN, that is. If you don't really want to win, then keep on taking the high road. It'll lead you straight over a cliff.

And the instant response strategy is absolutely CRUCIAL. CONFRONT, CONFRONT, CONFRONT! IMMEDIATELY!

24. Wouldn't you think people are just tired of the negativity?
I'm waiting for the Democrats to put some real positive spin on what they stand for. I think voters would eat it up. Voters want to create new jobs, fix infrastructure, support education, save social security and make health care affordable. They want a better life for themselves. It's so much more tangible than spending billions to fight bogus wars. The democrats just need to say what people want to hear and not worry about responding to GOP lies -- it muddles their core platform.

32. We already do
Most presidential contenders already have websites detailing their positions, as do members of Congress. We have spent much time defining what we stand for--peace, justice and the American Way. Top Democrats have published hundreds of books on the subject.

We can do both--defend ourselves against Republican lies and get the word out as to what we are about.

26. Progressives Must Prepare For The Changing Future
Try not to get too discouraged or distracted by the
ugliness of political campaigning. We need to keep our focus
on maintaining our stability and long term perspective. The
mud-slinging is important, but it shouldn't take our attention
from what we do.
I think it's safe to say that truly progressive positions
will not be seen or heard much in this election campaign. It
may well take a long time before things change significantly,
we don't know.
That's why not getting to riled up about the trivial is
generally a good idea, except perhaps in certain situations.
The long term focus has us trying to avoid the disasters
war can bring, and then making our way in the world to the
best of our ability. I made some comments on Stan Goff's
website, stangoff.com, (be careful of how you access it, he
keeps track of visitors) about the problems the white
progressive community faces in this challenging world.
("Why White People Are Afraid", I think June of this
year.) We are facing the apparent decline of our economy at
home, with no forseeable end in sight. White progressives, I
point out, must see the struggle more thoughtfully,
particularly in terms of maintaining health and vigor in a
declining economic environment.
I made some points before Goff dismissed me that white
progressives have never had the dominant position in society,
even though they have influenced society quite a lot,(Franklin
Roosevelt should be considered as a patrician who made
concessions, I think). The future will be Asiatic, one other
patrician commentator has written, and it looks as if that is
the direction the world is heading. This means white
progressives must take care of themselves as a priority, and
hope that their vision of a well-adjusted world can exist
sometime, in some way, as the future unfolds. They cannot
expect the other peoples of the world, including their own
elite rulers, to assist in their progress.
Without being too dreary, I see our problem as
maintaining our equillibrium in a changing world rather than
thinking our positive ideas are on the verge of victory.
Things for most of us may be seen as that they are never
as bad or as good as they seem. So I hope white progressives
and their allies will not get too discouraged by events, and
to not get too excited when something positive happens as
well. Stay focused on doing what you can, and don't let the
problems of the world cause you to stop trying to do good.
Good luck.

Aren't you ready to let the politicians know that we, the majority of Americans, want an end to the ongoing war in Iraq? Then please join me, along with Yoko Ono, Susan Sarandon, Alice Walker, Dolores Huerta, Cornell West, my friends at CODEPINK, and MANY MORE in signing Give Peace a Vote.

This is a Voters Pledge that we will only vote for candidates who publicly call for a speedy withdrawal from Iraq and will keep us from engaging in future unjustified wars. Let's send a clear message this November and beyond, that we believe in international law and diplomacy over aggression.

Please sign the Voters Pledge and ask at least 10 of your friends to sign as well. With millions of peace voters, we can elect leaders who will Give Peace a Chance. That's all we are saying.

Simply copy and paste this url in the address bar of your web browser to sign up NOW: http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/codepink/petition.jsp?petition_KEY=295&t=GPV.dwt

40. Democrats don't have to spend millions to dig up dirt on Republicans
While the gop spends and spends to find something about the dems, given the people who populate thier party these days, I don't think the Dems have to go far or spend much to get back.
And, if the gop plans to trash on a bill one person or another vetoed, all they have to do is point out something in the bill that was wrong and that's why they voted against it. You can always find something in a bill that is bad.
