That only took one day- Allen will continue TV ads attacking Webb
Thread from yesterday

The ad opens with Allen noting the campaign's disastrous recent drift away from "the real issues you care about" and acknowledged that "some of this I've brought on myself."

"But the negative personal attacks and baseless allegations have also pulled us away from what you expect and deserve," he said.

Clinton backs Webb; N.Y. senator seeks 'change in direction'

One day after urging a return to issues, Republican Sen. George Allen indicated he will continue running ads attacking Democrat Jim Webb's stance on women at the military academies.

Dick Wadhams, Allen's campaign manager, confirmed after a backyard appearance by Allen near Fredericksburg that the ads will stay on the air. "That is very much a legitimate issue in this race," Wadhams said.

The Allen campaign's insistence on continuing the ads came 16 hours after the freshman senator aired a 2-minute commercial in television markets statewide Monday night, saying that "negative personal attacks and baseless allegations have also pulled us away from what you expect and deserve."

Allen's appearance yesterday at the home of House Speaker William J. Howell, R-Stafford, served as the launch of Allen's new "Issues, Ideas, Proven Record Tour," with a stop also scheduled yesterday at Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport in Weyers Cave.

1. Takes hypocrisy to a new level I would say...
It should be about issues, unless it's about my opponents character. Felix is a piece of shit liar.

3. Going extremely negative killed Kilgore. Felix (w/ the help of Kilgore's
manager Waldhams (Rove Jr.)) is following the same path. Webb should continue to stay on the high road.

4. Kilgore went way over the top with the Hitler ad....
I can see Felix pushing the envelope too far if he gets desparate enough, and Wadhams is a nutjob so he certainly wouldn't hold back.

It will be interesting to watch the next few weeks.

Webb will be running a lot of ads right before the election I predict, he's raising a ton of money right now, far outpacing Felix at this point.

He's going to be having a fundraiser with Bill Clinton next week, and I know that will bring in a huge infusion for him going into the final stretch.

6. Yeah, I got the invite to the Clinton/Webb fundraiser at Chuck Robbs's
House. Unfortunately, I'm a little short on the $28k required to attend.

I bet Waldham was behind that Hitler ad. Didn't he run Kilgore's campaign?

7. I don't recall...
but LaCivita or whatever the hell his name is that was responsible for the swiftboat p.r. campaign is a "senior consultant" on Allen's campaign. So we see where Felix was going with this campaign. Issues my ass.

2. I think this add could backfire on Allen.
Sadly, probably some folks were leaning toward Allen once they figured out he is a racist. They were in on the secret - Allen is their kind of guy.

Now, those same folks are thinking (perhaps hoping) that Webb is a sexist.

In other words, the Allen ad has neutralized the jerks among us.

5. I read that in an op/ed piece-polisci profs were quoted
as well as some "political insiders"

They didn't put it that way as if they would...they said that these ads reminded them of the Kilgore ads and that it would scare off the middle, the soccer moms, and the cringe factor is really high on them.

I agree-if it were a 527 that would be one thing but right after these ads (on YouTube) you get the "I am George Allen and I approved this ad" thing (with him fuzzily walking with his daughter). To my eye it doesn't look right or feel right. We will see.

8. Hmm, Webb wrote that 30 years ago
He's said that if he were to write another article, it wouldn't say the same thing, that his views and his opinions have changed over time. Allen, however, doesn't appear to have changed one thing in his views or opinions over time, he's still the same racist bigot he was in his younger days. The only apparent difference is that he's developed the good sense not to parade his racism in front of everybody.

But if Dickwad hams--oops, that Dick Wadhams--wants to make a campaign issue out of everything the candidates have said, done and written over their entire lifetimes, I think Mr. Webb can play that game and come out ahead.
