MSNBC's Amy Robach: "Will voters even remember this (Foley) on Nov. 7?"
She just asked her guests this question. "People have a short attention span...will the voters even remember this in a few weeks?"

opinions and pundits. and there is always more than one side to be 'debated' and 'questions' to be asked.

And if Republicans are successful at spinning this as somehow the fault of the Democrats, well you can just imagine the electoral outcome next month.

5. In a word Yes!
along with a number of other debacles. Hell even conservatives are fed up with the repugs in congress, will this lead to a dem victory in Nov i certainly hope so.

James Carvile said the other day before the Foley blowup, if democrats can't win in this atmosphere perhaps they should resolve the party (paraphrasing here)

So Ms. Robach imho, is whistling by the grave yard!

pushed by the House Repubs can unify their base..Let's get moving with "what we are going to do" rather than what garbage they are doing..Yet to see a real firm plan of Democratic action on Iraq, Health Care etc..Want it happen and happen big..but the money machine is at work big time in the Repub party. We need to set an end date for Iraq..to hell with the fall out. Health care for all..If we can spend billions being hated by the world ..we can spend millions being loved by our own people.

21. On the contrary, a Republican sex scandal will resonate quite well.
For decades now the Repukes have been pushing themselves as champions of morality, oh-so-much-holier-than-thou. One of their own was caught up in an adolescent sex scandal, and the leadership was covering for him. Oh yes, the "midwestern repub voter" is going to understand this one easily.

10. The "real" scandal is the way the GOP has handled this.
It's not just Foley. It's the cover-ups, the finger-pointing, the attempt to be the last man standing in the life raft.

17. It won't go away
Because pundits will continue to ask the question all the way until November 7th...

"Will the Mark Foley scandal hurt the Republicans on Nov. 7th..."

If the polls go down "This is due to the mark Foley scandal..."

If the polls go up "Have people forgotten the Mark Foley scandal..."

The news editors and managers know that sex sells and it is good for ratings. They'll milk the sex part another week. More pages coming out? Another week. Hasturd doesn't resign? More flap.

The shock will indeed wear off by Nov. 7th...but what do the Repukes have to fall on? Looks like gas is going back up since Opec is cutting production. Mine went from $1.97 to $2.15 in one day. If there is a $2 sign on the pump people are pissed.

You have 13 dead soldiers in 2 days in Iraq. Iraq is a quagmire. Afghanistan is a mess.

30. Tell you how you're wrong?
Really, what we have is a guy who sent inappropriate messages to a high school kid. He didn't sleep with the kid, it was just words.

No. What you have is a guy who championed federal laws to protect minors (anyone under the age of 18) from INTERNET sexual predators preying on MINORS through the INTERNET! And how do you know at this early date in the investigation that he hasn't slept with any of these pages? Every day more pages come forward with more stories about Foley. In addition to that, the one former page who has been publicly outed has hired an attorney. His attorney has refused to confirm or DENY that his client had physical sexual contact with Foley.

And for that we are calling for the Speaker of the House to resign because 'he should have known' about what? That a guy was sending IMs?

Umm... Republicans are calling for Hastert to resign. He failed as a leader. He dropped the ball and then he lied about it. Then he got caught and told some more lies. On top of which he didn't need to know about the IMs to START an investigation based on the emails that he DID know about. That WOULD have been the proper course of action, you know?

25 years ago, even the act of sleeping with a minor wasn't even cause of resignation by the perpetrator, much less the leadership.

Twenty-five years ago there was no federal law concerning internet predators. The age of consent varies from state to state. The federal law that Foley certainly appears to have violated does not take age of consent into consideration.

I think we are in danger of overplaying our hand on the Foley thing. (David Gergen and Lanny Davis have said likewise.)

Fuck David Gergen, Lanny Davis (if that's what they said), and fuck you too.

Save it for a real scandal.

What, like when a democrat is caught in a consensual relationship with an adult intern?

That's how you're wrong in this thread on this topic. I suspect as a freeper that you're used to being wrong in many other aspects of your life as well. Oh, and as a "concern troll" - you suck! LOL

what Foley did is just "naughty behavior." Theirs is culture that is fine with predation, as long as you don't get caught. They deviate from the Fundy base on this.

Not too smart to go with the line of "nothing to see here' with this much evidence.

26. The MSM Can't Handle A REAL Scandal
because their minds can't grasp it, and their bosses won't let them.

Otherwise, we'd be seeing something more like 1967-1972 outside our windows every day, in this Vietnam, the Sequel, scandal.

Or 1973: Watergate Redux 2000-2006

Or (the beat goes on....yes the beat goes on)

innocent until proven guilty in America. Not so any more.

But, I do agree with you that Hastert shouldn't be tossed or forced
to resign solely on what as come to light so far. Wait for the facts.

I'm old-fashioned like that. :hi:

18. Unfortunately, she is correct. There is a saying in Washington that goes:
A week is like a lifetime in politics.

This will be forgotten about PRONTO when something else is brought to everyone's attention by the MSM - say bombing Iran - or whatever else the Republicans have up their sleeves.

27. I remember waiting for "Fitzmas"...
...we'd go for a week or two at a stretch and it would be Plamegate, 24/7. Then, without warning, all of the discussions would stop. Then they'd start up again. And stop.

These things go in cycles, and given the deep roots of this one, I don't think the cycle is going to expire before November 7th. The whole rehab scam and the ethics committee investigation are custom-tailored to last past the midterms, Rove is going to have to wave one hell of a shiny object in front of the American people to take their mind off of a member of the House of Representatives encouraging a 16 year old to go measure his penis.

He'll need Osama, "dead or alive," just like Junior promised FIVE YEARS AGO. Anything less and all eyes will remain on Representative Jon Mark Karr...er, I mean, "Mark Foley."

32. Clinton
They are still talking about Clinton and Monica. In fact they were the first two words out of the mouths of TV readers after they told of the IMs Foley was sending to groom his victims.

A prosecutor of sex crimes is in our family. This act by Foley was recognized by anyone familiar with the victimization of children for sex as 'grooming' the kid for future sex.
Don't discount it.

Will the voters remember that Foley is a sex predator at election time and that the leader of the House chose to cover the facts up so he could stay in office? The Republican voters might not remember it. Before Bush was elected 50% of the population knew the only way he could run a business was into the ground. They knew he had insecurities that would make him a good puppet for stronger personalities. They knew he bent the law at every opportunity in his dealings. Yet he was elected. SO...they probably won't care that Republicans in the House sheltered a predator in their midst. Their 'values' won't allow them to consider that they are wrong.

34. well, if M$M stops covering it ... like they didn't cover Kerry + Edwards
speeches and gigantic crowds before election 2004 and didn't cover any speeches at length and never discussed the democratic party's plans.....so that even many DUers contend Kerry-Edwards ran a bad campaign and democrats have no message.

Does anything happen if it's not on M$M???? well, no. Or at least it didn't happen in the world-view of many Americans. It was not reported or reported very little, so we're left with many Americans who 'know': We weren't lied into Iraq, Bush-Cheney never said Iraq was responsible for 9-11, Cheney never swore at Leahy on the senate floor, there is no torture by US in Iraq and Afghanistan or at Gitmo, bushco didn't want/need a pipeline through Afghanistan so they never buddied up with the Taliban, US didn't help create the Taliban when it was recruiting Muslims to fight the Soviets in Kabul, Rummy + Bush-Reagan didn't sell WMDs to Saddam, etc etc etc......
