4. gotta go for: OTHER
the Fairness Doctrine is critically important ... but it will NOT restore our democracy ... we've seen the abusive growth of the military-industrial complex with and without the Fairness Doctrine ... we've seen the rich get richer and the poor get poorer with and without the Fairness Doctrine ... we've seen an imperial foreign policy for the exclusive benefit of multi-national corporations with and without the Fairness Doctrine ...

the WORST poison is money ... the SOUNDEST way to get our country back on the right track is to outlaw all private money in campaigns and to severely restrict paid lobbying ...

5. If we had a Fairness Doctrine the people would DEMAND public financing of
campaigns. Sad, but it really all does link together, and every serious issue links to media exposure.

9. I agree. It is all tied together.
Primary issues:

Fairness doctrine 2006 (updated to recognize *today's* realities)

Publically funded campaigns with NO campaign donations from ANYONE at ANY time, except in the primaries. Once the candidates are selected and the primaries are done, all campaigning is done on the public dime. A TOTAL ban on all third party campaign advertising.

Kill the lobby industry. Update congressional ethics to a zero tolerance level.

Secondary Issues:

Paper ballots

Increase the size of the House to 1 Rep per 250,000 citizens.

13. My fear is we don't get it...
Edited on Fri Oct-06-06 04:25 PM by BrewAz
Of course we want to get the Democratic process to work. My fear is that progressives just don't get it. Reality is that the "Rovian Way" works...while trying to build a majority through works and good words...doesn't. Or at least has not for the last 6 years...or I suppose we could go back to the Newt world of 1995ish.

At issue is whether the "right way"...democracy in action and the moral high ground in politics works. I am sceptical....A Democratic Rove...who could put together a strategy that Dems/Progressives could all get behind even if they did not agree could assist in beating the Repugs at their own game.

As distasteful as that may be...it may be the only way.

15. Rove's way DID work - past tense - preKatrina. For the last year Rove's
way HASN'T been working and people are not even willing to buy it anymore. Bush's STEADY low numbers for the past year is proof of that.

Now that more people UNDERSTAND the machinations involved in Bush getting his war and their incompetence in Katrina, they are just not so easy to be fooled as they once were.

Enough people have matured politically over the past few years, that I doubt they are as susceptible to Rove type tactics over the next few election cycles.

14. Your poll should be relabled step 2, step 1
We don't get to reinstate the fairness doctrine until and unless we win.

16. Other. Unfortunately the other will never happen in our lifetimes.
In the first place we purposely don't have a democracy, we have a representative republic (see sigline for the difference), and we elect our representatives to represent us the citizens. Unfortunately, through ignorance, apathy, mean-spiritedness, whatever, we let the game be rigged. There is no longer any recourse, no mechanism in place, to correct the two-faced oligarchy we have in this country.

I think it is crystal clear that the re:puke:s are not interested in sharing power, and the Democratic establishment showed us all, over 30 years ago, that they would rather see the re:puke:s in charge, than to share their power. Third party? Fuggedaboutit, Perot was the best chance we had at that, and it might have worked if he hadn't been bat-shit crazy.

17. Instead of empoying a RoveKKKlone, maybe we should just
bring George Lakoff on board and let him advise our candidates on how and when to speak, AS WELL AS get ourselves in the position to get back the Fairness Doctrine legislatively... We cannot govern if we cannot win. We need to win to begin to set things right again.
