Cheney: GOP control of Congress needed for president's agenda

By Phil Davis / Associated Press

SARASOTA, Fla. - Vice President Dick Cheney on Friday stuck to the familiar themes of maintaining tax cuts and staying the course in the war on terror as reasons to keep President Bush's Republican allies in control of Congress.

"We have a president living in the White House who deserves a Congress that works with him, not against him," Cheney said. He urged the southwest Florida party faithful to get out the vote and keep the 13th District in Republican hands. Katherine Harris now holds the seat, but is running for U.S. Senate.

"Dick Cheney's baseless remarks are nothing but a clear sign that he knows Republicans are in trouble, especially his buddy Vern Buchanan," said Adrienne Elrod, a spokeswoman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "Democrats support lowering the high cost of gasoline, protecting the future of social security and a rational strategy for the war in Iraq."

About 150 protesters waved signs that included "Impeach Bush" and "Cheney lied" at Cheney's motorcade outside the event at a waterfront hotel in downtown Sarasota.

Cheney has been traveling extensively on behalf of GOP candidates as the party tries to maintain control of Congress in the November elections.

Buchanan's campaign did not immediately release fundraising totals for Friday's event.

7. They HAVE been working with the president. What have we got?
A decimated economy.
Offshored infrastructure.
Ridiculous energy prices.

And despite some talk about having all these resolved, no action whatsoever that's been helping.

They have only themsleves to blame. They have had the House and Senate since 1994, and combined with the Presidency for 6. Nothing good has been happening. And the swing voters who have taken them in good FAITH have lost enough of it for these folks to feel the pinch too.

They are idiots to keep referring to the President. We all
know that it is only a figure of their speech. He's the Prez and Rumsfeld is his VP. And they're fighting for their survival and the survival of their sponsors. and to stay out of jail. They need two more years to destroy ALL our laws for their protection and the protection of their sponsors.

11. Yes, notice the last line. Perhaps embarrassment is the reason

no numbers were released.

12. I hope they disinfected that hotel after he left.
Ridding it of the odor will take a little longer.
