Ken Mehlem circulates pic of Albright : "clinking glasses with Mr. Kim."

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/11/us/politics/11politics.html?_r=1&th=&oref=slogin&emc=th&pagewanted=print

......Indeed, Mr. Kim, the North Korean leader, seems to have become the latest bogeyman in Republican political imagery. On Tuesday, the Republican National Committee circulated a photograph of Madeleine K. Albright, Mr. Clinton’s secretary of state, clinking glasses with Mr. Kim.

The picture was taken during talks in 2000 that were aimed at persuading the North to limit its nuclear program. Ken Mehlman, the Republican National Committee chairman, said in an interview that voters might be seeing more such images in the coming weeks — accompanied by a reminder that Ms. Albright had presented Mr. Kim a basketball autographed by Michael Jordan.

His committee coined a phrase for it — “basketball diplomacy” — which Mr. Mehlman sprinkled through his remarks.

Under an agreement Mr. Clinton struck with North Korea in 1994, the North agreed to “freeze” its production of plutonium at its main nuclear plant at Yongbyon, in return for energy aid. North Korea abided by the freeze.

But starting around 1997, the North Koreans took steps to start a second, secret nuclear program, one based on enriching uranium. South Korean and American intelligence agencies did not find conclusive evidence of that program until the summer of 2002, and that fall the Bush administration confronted the North Koreans with its evidence.

Now, under attack by Republicans like Mr. McCain, Democrats, including Mrs. Clinton, are firing back. The Senate Democratic leader, Harry Reid of Nevada, has called on Mr. Bush to appoint a senior official to conduct a thorough review of his “failed North Korea policy,” while a spokesman for Mrs. Clinton issued a stinging response to Senator McCain.......

15. Well...
who could have possibly foreseen that Gim Jeong-il and his government would have used that technology to build nuclear weapons.
I mean, if he had just told us that was what he was going to do, we probably wouldn't have given him the technology.

9. Watching & listening to Mehlman is excruciating.
I think he is just a wind-up top. He is shipped to Rove who inserts a programmed CD into the top - Karl winds him up, and out he goes into the media world.
Expose him Matthews, expose him!

Hey, they tell a thousand words, right, and can carry a much bigger punch than a well told story.

13. Excuuuuuuuuuuse me....
but, did the North Koreans have a nuclear capability while she was Sec. of State? No. They wanted one, but she kept talking to them. And, apparently she clinked glasses with them. OH THE SHAME!

I ask you -- Would you rather have a Sec. of State who clinked glasses with the North Koreans in an attempt to for some sort of relationship with them, or would you rather have a North Korea that has a nuclear arsenal, and is so isolated and pissed off, they're ready to use it?

Ask (especially) the people on the West Coast, whydoncha....

16. Time for a picture of Nixon hugging Mao
Wouldn't hurt to include a caption saying that Mao was already known to be directly responsible for the deaths of millions of Chinese citizens when that photo was taken. Might also make sense to list the number of times Republican Presidents held Summit meetings with leaders of the Soviet Union.

Maybe if Colin or Condi had practiced it a little more, NK wouldn't be shooting nukes off today.

19. Had Bush not ripped off the election in 2000....
President Al Gore probably would have made a state visit to North Korea. We would have had "Ping Pong Diplomacy II". I am convinced of this. Unfortunately, Clinton did not have enough time to set up closer ties with the North Koreans either. I also think the South Koreans would still have their Sunshine Policy as well.

Bush has made the world such a better place. :sarcasm:

Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 08:46 AM by Tom Rinaldo
In addition to Nixon hugging Mao, as was pointed out above, why not release pics of Rumsfeld smiling beside good old boy Hussein?

Text could document the number of times a Republican President met with the leader of the Soviet Union while the Soviet Union had nuclear tipped missiles aimed at American cities. Text could point out that Mao and Hussein were already known to be mass murderers of their own citizens at the time when American Republican leaders shared pleasantries and hand shakes with them. Text could point out that diplomacy traditionally actually involves meeting with our adversaries IN PERSON, something prior Republican Administrations, more adept at foreign policy, fully understood.
