Sen. (Olympia) Snowe (R-ME) moderates war stance
http://pressherald.mainetoday.com/news/state/061011snowe.html

Maine Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe tempered her support for the Iraq war Tuesday, saying the Bush administration should reassess its strategy unless the situation changes for the better in three months.

Snowe's two opponents in next month's election criticized the statement as coming too late.

"It sounds like another of Olympia Snowe's election-year epiphanies," said Jean Hay Bright, the Democratic challenger from Dixmont. "It is startling that it took her until four weeks before the election. It's not good enough."

Snowe's prepared statement saying she was "deeply disturbed" by sectarian violence in Iraq echoed sentiments expressed by Sen. John Warner, R-Va., the Armed Services Committee chairman who recently traveled to Iraq.

We must make the moderate Northeastern Republican as endangered a species as the Democrat from Dixie....

2. She should have term limited out many years ago as she promised.
She can't even keep her word about that so why would I trust her now.

3. Not likely a political move since..
Olympia has the support of the older voters and hunters here in Maine and has never had a real challenge from anyone before, and, not likely to this time despite all the crap happening in Washington. So, I would say her position isn't intended to stave off any challenge from Democrats here in Maine. Of course, I will be voting Democrat as usual, but, don't expect any change in leadership from Maine, I live in a state which supports War and Guns....sorry to say! We also have a lot of people who cant read, don't know whats going on, and, are ignorant as hell! So, so sad!

5. So sad indeed
Many of the people in my neck of the woods (hell, anywhere north of Augusta for that matter) didn't make it out of high school and the ones that did squeaked through school systems where having a HS diploma means you are qualified to teach high schoolers.

All of their news comes from Faux News if they are paying any attention to the world outside of Maine at all.

That said, I do believe Snowe's epiphany is election year posturing. She knows that many of the slack jaws won't go out and vote in an off year election (and probably don't even know there is one). Since a good chunk of her base will be sitting in deer stands in November, she knows she might be a bit vulnerable if large amounts of Dem's make the effort to go to the polls. She is weakly trying to win the confidence of moderate Dem's who could really turn a sure victory into a close defeat.

I would love to see her get surprised with an unimagined defeat by Hay Bright...and Collins is next!

6. I wouldn't hold my breath...
on that one. I wish we could dump Olympia and Susan ,but, highly unlikely. Too many weak minds around here who cant see the big picture...and are suckered into the "fear factor" rhetoric coming out of Washington. Its like this, if you vote US out:

1. Another 911.
2. They will take away your guns.
3. Your taxes will increase.
4. Your SS will be taken away.

Of course, we know that is a bunch of crock, but, Mainers will swallow hook, line, and sinker!

8. I won't hold my breath
I know you're right, but it is hope that keeps us from staying on the canvas and forfeiting the fight.

There are way too many weak minds in our state. Perhaps we can get some campaign money from Dean to run an all day wrasslin' marathon on the tee vee on November 7th...keep them home and away from the voting booths.

7. The tale of the evil sisters
Snowe isn't going anywhere, and if bush needs her vote, he'll get it. As long as the media continue to point to Snowe and Collins as "moderates" they can vote for 10,000 Alitos and 20,000 wars without losing a wink of their deep conservative sleep. I live in "red" Maine, and while my neighbors can't stand bush, they believe that they are moderates. Snowe's statement about being "deeply disturbed" reminds me of those horribly insulting responses I receive to my pleas to her.

9. I've received some of those same letters
I sent the last one back with a hand written note asking her office not to waste the paper anymore because my intent in writing the original letter was not to be patronized with hollow promises and political double speak. It was to register my complaint about her claiming to be moderate while backing * on the issues where a moderate stance was necessary...no response yet!

10. The letters
When I wrote to Snowe about my concerns that Ashcroft blurred the lines about church and state, she wrote back to me about abortion. I guess being a female, that is the only answer I'll ever get. Besides I teach, and Snowe's husband screwed me over bigtime. Those letters which basically say nothing, hit the wood stove shortly after they hit my box. There are no "moderate" republicans; there are wingnut crazies and their toadies.

11. A moderate republican...
is a temporary state of being in republicans whereby they distance themselves from * and his misadministartion for a four week period. Much like rare astronomical events like eclipses and comets, they seem to appear lurking just at the horizon every two years in mid-October.
