Dear Friend:
Last week, Howard Zinn was in town to give a lecture on history and hysteria. While he was here, I was able to interview him for Progressive Radio, and you can listen to our conversation by going to the Howard Zinn interview. I always find Howard illuminating and inspiring. I hope you do, too.

I also did a little reporting last week. I talked to a guy named Steve Howards out in Colorado who was arrested simply for criticizing the Vice President to his face! This is what Howards said: "Your policies in Iraq are reprehensible." Ten minutes later, the Secret Service arrested him, handcuffed him in front of his eight-year-old son, charged him with assaulting the Vice President, and hauled him off to jail. Though the DA later dropped all charges, Howards is suing the Secret Service. I sure hope he wins. For his sake--and ours.

As always, I appreciate your feedback.

Sincerely,

Matthew Rothschild

1. The criticism was unusual and suspicious, and Cheney felt threatened.
Hence, assault.

...Ah, before I forget. :sarcasm:

7. I don't understand this idea of a reverential attitude towards leaders
I mean this is SO antithetical to the very idea of democracy...We have moved away from the days of the divine right to rule or did no one tell these people?

I just find it so baffling-the re-emergence of this kind of thinking. I remember some of the criticisms leveled at Colbert after the WHCD about how he wasn't "respectful". Bush is the president not the king :wtf:.

I am not saying people should punch political leaders in the face or spit on them etc. But they are PUBLIC SERVANTS. They may be making more money than 99% of the populace, they may have more power, but at the end of the day THEY ARE THERE TO SERVE YOU. They owe you not the other way round and any citizen of a democracy who feels their leaders have let them down have the RIGHT to say so...

I just don't get this bowing and scraping before people, who are at the end of the day civil servants.
The citizens are their bosses not the other way round.....

I notice this so much in the media nowadays (specially from people like Katie Couric, Elizabeth Bummiller, Sheryl Stolberg etc.)-this tone of devout reverence ...wtf is that all about :wtf:

I just listened to the Howard Zinn interview that www.progressive.org put on their website and it is great. He talks about Columbus and imperialism, worth a listen

10. Stevesaid yesterday that he had filed suit against the SS agent.
I believe it was for false arrest. He said he was starting low on the totum pole, and depending on what they learned through discovery and how things went, was fully prepared to file suit against Cheney!

Go STEVE!
