I haven't served YET!!!

I have to bring up an old story as I'm thinking about the upcoming outpouring of patriotism by young republicans who no doubt will be off to the Army Recruiting Station (any day now) to help bush take on the evil empire.

In November 2002, a young lad in my favorite watering hole took exception to my objection to going to war in Iraq. He said I should join the Army and go to Iraq to prove my love of country. I told him I already served 24 years and served in a combat zone. I asked him where he served in the military. He gave me the classic chickenhawk answer:

"I HAVEN'T SERVED YET." He didn't finish his beer but got his scrawny ass out of my bar.

I know I've told this before and apologize and most likely will tell it again but it is so telling.

Boss, you totally kick ass.

And he hasn't served yet? My guess is that he never will either. Thank you for your service and keep up the good fight. Great story btw.

It needs to be repeated. I've repeated a few stories about my chickenhawk contacts as well, and will likely do so again.

Think about the bush admin in the propaganda run up for the Iraq war. The only one who appeared to have any reservations was Powell--the only who served in combat. He failed us in the end but...

just get better with age. I bet he hasn't shown his scrawny ass back at the bar again.
