Angelides demands equal time on Leno
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 06:10 PM by cal04
The Democratic challenger to California Gov.Arnold Schwarzenegger is angry that TV host Jay Leno has invited the Republican incumbent on his show weeks before the gubernatorial election but so far has snubbed him.

Schwarzenegger, seeking a second term, was set to go on NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" for an interview on Wednesday, marking his fifth appearance as a guest since he used that late-night program to announce his bid for public office in 2003.

Leno has so far declined to extend an invitation to Democrat Phil Angelides. A spokesman for Angelides, the state's Treasurer, said that move violates federal rules that generally require broadcast outlets to give opposing candidates equal time.

"The governor has spent $35 million in launching negative attack ads against Phil Angelides, and now NBC is just giving him further free time on national network TV to campaign," the spokesman, Brian Brokaw, told Reuters.

1. Ho-kay.
Schwarzenegger was an actor before he was governor, and has been on Jay Leno many times in the past. I'm sure he has a better agent, too. Maybe I'm off on this, but this Angelides guy is coming across as a whiner. It's only a Late Night Talk show. Equal time is a moot point since Reagan killed that, and it probably never applied to entertainment shows anyway.

I'm a Californian that hates Ah-nold, but this is just pathetic. I'm still going to vote for the loser Angelides, but not with any kind of enthusiasm I assure you.

13. "whiner" "loser"
Man, what flavor is the kool-laid? You're a good example of what's wrong with our population.....ADD (attention deficit disorder)! Last year, Arnold subjected California to a wasteful stupid special election. Arnold won even when he lost, overwhelmingly rejected, because he drained the financial coffers of our first defense workers....firemen, police and nurses and of course the "vilified secular" teachers! This year Arnold is GREEN. This is a shallow botaxed man with no core values, for him the ends justify the means. If he is elected, he will return to Grover Norquist-Pete Wilson Arnold. Then he will run for senator, probably with the help of DINO Dianne Feinstein.

But hey, who needs brains to run a state as big and screwed up as California, Arnold is the right fit. This state voted in term limits, so the state is run by staff and lobbyists.....all unelected.
Important legislation cannot be law without two thirds vote, so a minority of Grover Norquist Republicans can starve the state of revenue. Measure 13, limiting property taxes, have left the once great California public education system on par with Mississippi and Georgia.

At least we know Jay Leno is a libertarian who loves his tax breaks, to hell with the common good.

17. Yawn
Angelides is a loser, no matter how you try and dress him up. He has run what I think has got to be the worst campaign I've ever seen a politician run, and that says a lot. And yet, I'm still going to vote for him, as I said above, so how about you go and waste somebody else's time?

22. The party takes our state for granted, that's the issue
No one here is going to vote for Arnold, but we want some better candidates dammit! Cruz and now this guy? It's absurd. Our state is full of smart people, why do we keep running these Sac-hacks?

I will vote for Angelides... despite my general principle that finance people should never be in charge of anything except, well, finance...

5. If that's the reaction DUers are having, the campaign should reconsider
Because this plays into the framing of action hero vs. paper pusher.

If some DUers are having that reaction, can you imagine the general populace?

4. Leno's a bush sukkin whore; maybe that needs publicity to?

6. are Leno watchers going to decide the election?
Phil should focus on photo ops with nurses, teachers, firefighters, police, and all the other regular working people getting screwed over by Schwarzenegger and his wealthy friends.

There is a way to turn this into lemonade; begging to get on the show may not be it.

Maybe Phil can get on Letterman or the Daily Show instead?

8. Whether Phil would choose to go on the show or not, isn't the point.
Favortism that is patently illegal is.

Phil on Letterman is a great idea, but the thing is, giving a candidate a tv stump with millions of viewers right before an election and not offering the same to his opponnent is illegal and Leno should get such a pounding over this he never blows it again.

It's about keeping the press in line with their role as Fourth Estate.

we can make a big deal over it, but i hope the campaign pretends they didn't even notice. otherwise they look like jealous whiners, fairly or not.

12. How exactly is this illegal?
The Fainress Doctrine is no longer in effect and equal time legislation contains exemptions for news interview shows(which have a broad definition).

Its why Ahnuld could appear on Oprah during the lead up the recall but they couldn't show his movies on TV that month.

21. getting on there isn't the point. making a good impression is.
making a big stink about getting excluded makes Phil look like an uptight weenie, whether he's right or wrong.

his allies should make it known in the media that Schwarz is getting this unfair benefit (and, more importantly, the state is paying for his travel--what, he can't afford plane fare?) but not tie ourselves in knots trying to get him on the show. better to show you're a good sport than wheedle your way onto the show but look like an ass.

25. Uh. It make him look like he understands the media is on Arnold's side.
Which is the truth.

And Angelides would be excellent on Leno. He had more personality than Arnold in the debate, and I've honestly never seen the guy be anything less than witty, charming, and pregressive.

He should "weedle" his way on the shoe if that's the only way he'd get on it, and he should and would charm the pants off everyone once he's on.

24. i agree, i'm GLAD ANgelides is calling out NBC and Leno on whoring
for Arnold.

people cry about how Angelides is no place to be seen and when he calls out the media whores they attack him.

the fact is Angelides IS campaigning everyday . it's not his fault if the whore media that pimps for Arnold is ignoring him.

at the very least i'm glad it would get it out to people that it's unfair.

Calling someone who's BETTER than Ahnold a "loser" and "pathetic" is sad, and, well, PATHETIC.

What is more important, people? Why don't we focus on voting for someone better?

19. Seriously...and Angelides is pretty funny guy and has a great personality
which he showed in the debates. He'd make the most out of a Leno appearance.

I'm also taken aback by the fact that many here aren't offended by the fact that Arnold is getting free publicity. Even if you hated Angelides, you'd have to admit that it's completely unfair for NBC to pimp Arnold.

23. exactly, if it was just about entertainment or whatever, why not have him
on AFTER the election. or even during a time when there wasn't a campaign going on.

why is NBC having him on NOW just as the elections are coming up.

this is such crap, and i can't believe how people here can't see what NBC is doing. do people really think voters will vote based on what they see on the news only ?

Angelides is great. the debate had a Republican Moderator plus the Gropinator teaming up against Angelides yet Angelides still won easily. he came off really well. and for those complaining about Angelides being a whiner, they should watch this debate and look at the Gropinator.

It's over. If you are in California resources would be allocated focusing on the U.S. congress, which is what I am doing, and working to retake the House.

32. Angelides should contact Letterman and do a top10 spoof
of the Leno situation. And then when meathead whines about it throw it back in his face. Make it self-depricating, and go for free media exposure through replays on local news and CNN. Don't pull any punches, you having nothing to lose and everything to gain. Letterman may be open to it.
