Tales of sex with 1960s Packers ignite global media interest (Republican)
Tales of sex with 1960s Packers ignite global media interest
Written by Ashley Spencer

Usually, Sandy Sullivan receives just over 150 hits per day on her website. However, within the last 48 hours, the Republican secretary of state candidate has been bombarded with hits—with more than 86,000. The reason? Sullivan wrote a book—a tell-all detailing past love affairs with Wisconsin’s beloved Lombardi-era Green Bay Packers. Since Tuesday, media outlets around the world have turned their attention to the race for Wisconsin secretary of state, an obscure position drawing little interest from voters. According to the 65-year-old Sullivan, who spoke to The Daily Cardinal before appearing on CNN, global news organizations reported on her risqué self-published book. Her story even appeared in The Guardian, widely regarded as London’s most distinguished daily. Her book, “Green Bay Love Stories and Other Affairs,” details her rendezvous with Packers linebacker Dan Currie and Heisman-winning running back, Paul “Golden Boy” Hornung. Hornung wrote the one-page forward of the book. Sullivan is running against Doug LaFollette, the Democratic incumbent who has held office for 28 years. While the headlines have certainly given Sullivan publicity, LaFollette said he “was very embarrassed and sad for Wisconsin politics” because the rest of the nation, he said, is focusing on Sullivan’s sex life rather than the candidates’ platforms. “For goodness sakes it was 45 years ago!” said Sullivan, who also mentioned she is not ashamed of her book or behavior. She told critics to “look in their own closets.”

In a largely rural state like Wisconsin, there weren't a lot of things for a single, 20-something woman to do in the 1960s, Sandy Sullivan says.

Sleeping was one. Sleeping with Green Bay Packers was another.

Sullivan, now a 65-year-old Republican candidate for Wisconsin state secretary, is drawing attention for a steamy memoir that tells of her bed-hopping exploits with Green Bay football legends in the years when they had godlike status in the state.

Green Bay Love Stories and Other Affairs tells tales that would leave legendary football coach and quote machine Vince Lombardi speechless. When Lombardi preached "desire" to Paul Hornung and Dan Currie, a groupie wasn't quite what he had in mind.

GOP Candidate Proud Of Bed-Hopping With Packers
Secretary Of State Candidate Publishes Gushing Memoir

POSTED: 2:36 am EDT October 11, 2006

MADISON, Wis. -- Sex! The Green Bay Packers! Sex WITH the Green Bay Packers!

The usually ho-hum race for Wisconsin secretary of state is being spiced up by one candidate's naughty tell-all book about her bed-hopping exploits with Green Bay football legends during the team's glory days under Vince Lombardi in the 1960s.

Sandy Sullivan, a 65-year-old Republican with no political experience, self-published a gushing memoir in 2004 titled "Green Bay Love Stories and Other Affairs" in which she claims she was the girlfriend of Green Bay Packers Paul Hornung and Dan Currie, deflected a pass from Hall of Famer Don Hutson and was on the receiving end of a saucy comment from Richard Nixon.

If the book is to be believed, the Packers did a lot of their scoring off the field, and Sullivan got her share of playing time.

1. It happened 45 years ago but she's happy to write about it now
And I'll bet she's also a God-fearing Christian Republican who condemns the "loose morals" of today.

3. Hopefully, this won't cause an outbreak of Jesse-Ahnuld Syndrome...
...where the urge to be "outrageous" and elect someone utterly unqualified (because you're amused at their personal notoriety, find the sensible candidates "boring" by comparison, and wish to send an anti-politician message) overtakes common sense. However we may laugh at this story, the fact remains that a Repug SoS in a usually-Blue swing state like Wisconsin could have all sorts of bad effects for our party on a national basis. Do we really need another Harris or Blackwell in another crucial state?

4. I see what you mean. This woman obviously has realized
the rule of publicity today: namely, "Nothing sells like sex. Even if it's OLD sex."
