Baghdad: 9 U.S. soldiers, 1 Marine killed by roadside bombs, enemy fire
Insurgent Attacks Kill 10 U.S. Troops in Iraq

Wednesday, October 18, 2006

BAGHDAD, Iraq — The U.S. military reported Wednesday that 10 American troops had been killed in bombings and combat, raising to 68 the number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq in October.

A roadside bomb killed a provincial police intelligence chief in southern Iraq early Wednesday, police said.

The nine U.S. soldiers and one Marine were killed by roadside bombs and enemy fire in and around Baghdad on Tuesday, the military reported.

Four soldiers died when a roadside bomb struck their vehicle at about 6:50 a.m. Tuesday morning west of Baghdad, the military said in a brief statement.

3. My husband said a CNN site said it was "spiraling out of control."
I can't find that story, but we never really had control there.

Blessings on the families.

4. Current CNN front page: Bloodshed buries hopes for end to Iraq insurgency
Bloodshed buries hopes for end to Iraq insurgency

Early in the Iraq conflict, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld dismissed insurgents as "dead-enders." In 2005, Vice President Dick Cheney said the insurgency was in its "last throes." Now, those descriptions lie buried beneath thousands of bodies -- U.S. troops, Iraqi police, and everyday citizens slain simply because of their religious sect.

7. Thanks. Here is the quote:
The violence in Iraq has "spiraled totally out of control," Jan Egeland, the top U.N. humanitarian official, said last week. He estimated 1.5 million internally displaced people who had to flee their homes amid the violence, and another 1.2 million to 1.5 million Iraqis who fled to neighboring countries.

9. I think we never had control - and now its just gotten a whole lot
worse.

We really need to cut and run before all of our children are killed for absolutely nothing. Not one thing.

5. THE "NUMBER" IS 2782 this morning.
It is rising at an incredible rate just these last few days.

So when do we bring these children home?

6. My original headline for this was...
"2782...still a number, Tony?"

My personal feeling is that a lot of this depends on the outcome of the midterms. As long as the House and Senate remain GOP-heavy, Bush can sit back and say "No one's leaving Iraq as long as I'm President" and the uphill exercise in futility remains.

Right now we have members of the GOP "keeping their distance" and "jumping ship," but that's only because we are on the eve of an election. Granted, whether they win or lose in November, they will still need to focus on 2008.

If they win, they'll ratchet up the anti-Dem rhetoric. If they lose, they'll have to play to the left, which will further alienate the "base" that failed to keep them in power.

As the Iraq body count climbs...both Coalition casualties AND innocent Iraqi citizens...they may STILL distance themselves from Bush.

It will take an unprecedented groundswell of public anger to make this one go away, and the only thing that will motivate the politicians is the fear that their own fortunes may be at risk.

Granted, this is all an extremely over-simplified view of where we are right now, but I think it has validity.

8. 67 or 68 killed so far in October.
And I just saw where Cheney was saying that we had come a long way in Iraq. And Rumsfeld was saying we could not lose militarily because our army was so strong.

Are these guys taking LSD or what? I mean you really have to wonder about the sanity of this bunch.

11. Olbermann talked about this last night...
...and it's basically just a case of Bush and Co. attempting to keep the "base" pumped up. If they show weakness or fear or pessimism and lose the base, it's all over. Of course, little cracks and chips are appearing in the facade, so they may lose it ANYWAY...it will just take longer than if they told the truth.

The truth...what a concept.

12. I'm not sure when we lost the concept of "truth" in politics - and
in other stuff. Now we just lie about everything and think that its normal.
