MSNBC lead story: "BIG Democratic wins LIKELY on Election Day"
Big Democratic wins likely on Election Day
NBC/WSJ poll: Public's opinion of GOP hits record low

By Mark Murray
Political reporter
NBC News

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15319792/

WASHINGTON - Just 20 days until Election Day, the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds approval of the GOP-held Congress is at its lowest mark in 14 years, the Republican Party's favorability rating is at an all-time low and President George W. Bush's approval rating remains mired in the 30s -- all ominous signs for a party trying to maintain control of Congress.

In fact, according to the poll, Republicans are in worse shape on some key measures than Democrats were in 1994, when they lost their congressional majorities.

"There is not a single number in here that would suggest the Democrats will not have their best showing in a decade -- and maybe two decades," says Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, who conducted this survey with Republican Bill McInturff.

Landslide of bad GOP news: The poll, which was taken of 1,006 registered voters from Oct. 13-16 and has a margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points, comes a few weeks after Republicans encountered a series of setbacks, including the release of an intelligence estimate calling the Iraq war a "cause célèbre" for Islamic militants, journalist Bob Woodward's unfavorable portrayal of the Bush administration's handling of Iraq, and the news that former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., had inappropriate correspondence with teenage congressional pages.

Edit:
I absolutely HATE it that this is my first thought on reading the OP. On the other hand, someone had to make the first Debold post, *sigh* My turn, I guess.

7. Tortoise and the Hare
Hare got cocky.

Tortoise blistered his ass.

On November 7th, the Democratic Party needs to be the tortoise...NOT vice-versa.

3. I hope this reporting continues
If the results swing huge the other direction of countless reports otherwise, perhaps the populace will see what's going on.

Oh, wait. Gas is cheap, fuck it.

8. damn it, I want it to be 11/08 already so I can laugh like a naked
teenager in a field of pussywillows!

Then again, I want to tell the media to shut up because this may make our base think "oh we have it won, why vote?"

10. The winning buzz is, overall, a very good thing.
After the last 2, people aren't gonna stay home. Not our people, anyway. The Puggies have lots of reason to stay home, with more surfacing every day. For every 1 of ours that stays home due to everconfidence, there will be 3 uninvolved, ignorant twits who come out & vote Dem just because they wanna be on the winning team. I'll take the uninvolved, ignorant twit vote when I can get it. Too often the media spin has pulled them the other way.

11. I know, then again, our base is a lot more likely to be skeptical of the
news so they will vote just because they think the media is trying to mess with things!

31. I disagree....I think being the underdog makes the base understand they
need to get out and vote. All these polls being drummed up by the media...I don't know, call me cynical...but I'd rather they said we were running in a tight race.

13. Exactly!
or... why canvass? why phone bank? why donate? why write ltte? why work GOTV...

We have to continue to do everything we can to turn out every last Democratic vote that we can. If we are leading by 10 points in a race, let's win it by 20..... We need a buffer and.... we need to send a message.

GOTV.
Work your family, friends and neighbors - make sure they vote. Volunteer with your local County Dems - we are a small group in a Republican County... but we are phone banking, canvassing and working GOTV.

17. At the risk of seeming to spam the board...
Let me repeat: Work like you're three points down in every race. Spend at least eight hours this weekend doing something -- anything -- to help your local candidates. You can rest later, after November 7th.

Let's bury them.

And maybe even come down with something on November 6th, so you can spend the last four days working.

You'll thank yourself later.

23. We need to press even harder so there is no overconfidence
We have seen far too often that Dems will stay home assuming everything will turn out as it logically should.

I am telling NOBODY that I feel confident when asked. I say, "we'll see on Nov. 8th".

the headlines on November 8th: "Close, but No Cigar" Overconfidence and Low Democratic Party turnout enable republicans to retain control.
