OK, this belongs in the Alabama Forum, but sometimes I just can't help holding my home state up to well deserved ridicule.
Baldwin County, Alabama is the largest county east of the Mississippi. About 75 miles from southern to northern border. I live over a hour away from the county courthouse. That's the ONLY place you can vote absentee in person. All else must go through the u.s. mail.
1. Send the registrar of voters a request for the absentee voting REQUEST. 2. Get the REQUEST form and fill that out. Be damned sure all the 't's are crossed and 'i's dotted. 3. Return the request to the registrar. 4. Get the actual absentee ballot package. Instructions, tiny #2 lead pencil (3' long, 1/16th" dia.), 3 ENVELOPES, and the actual ballot. 5. Fill out ballot, carefully following instructions. 6. Put ballot, AND ONLY BALLOT, in BALLOT ENVELOPE. 7. Put that envelope in next envelope with a copy of your ID. Driver's license, copy of utility bill with your name and current address, etc. 8. Get TWO witnesses (or a NOTARY!) to fill out and sign affadavit on that envelope. 9. Put all that in third envelope and mail to registrar. 10. Cross fingers.
I voted absentee in the primary and left town a few days before the election. When I returned home there was a voicephone message from the registrar's office. I had put my ID IN THE WRONG ENVELOPE, and my ballot had been disqualified. I guess I forgot to cross my fingers. :grr:
