Issues that might be considered of great interest to women, such as abortion, have not been prominent in the race for U.S. Senate. But that doesn't mean that Tom Kean Jr. and Bob Menendez have not made efforts to appeal to a group that often sways elections in New Jersey.
As a Republican, Kean faces more of a challenge for women's votes than Democrat Menendez. New Jersey women vote in greater numbers than men, and they generally support the top of the Democratic ticket, according to exit polls conducted in past years for AP and television networks.

Menendez, 52, was appointed to the Senate in January to finish the term of Gov. Jon S. Corzine after representing Hudson County in the U.S. House for 13 years.

Kean had agreed to debate Menendez on Oct. 15 at a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters and two television stations in New York and Philadelphia, but pulled out because Menendez declined an invitation to debate on NBC's "Meet The Press."
