NYT: Noah Feldman arguing midterms won't change much???
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/22/magazine/22wwln_lede.html?_r=1&oref=slogin :

"With Democrats at the helm, Congress can certainly act in particular realms. . . . What Congressional Democrats cannot do, however, is change the basic direction of the country."

Did anyone else here find this article ODD??? For starters, is impeachment of Bush/Cheney not at least a possibility, and wouldn't that have a significant impact?

1. The Democrats already said that they won't impeach
Cause it will take up too much time, i'm glad they won't impeach, we got other things to do, like clean up chimpys mess. But what they could do is make Bush's last two years a living hell. Voting down his agenda, start up investagations and so forth.

3. Chimpy's Gonna Poop Faster Than The Mess Can Be Cleaned
It only takes moments for Chimpy to launch a "signing statement", but it requires months or years to stop them. Even if the Democrats were inclined to clean the mess, which I frankly doubt, the best way to do it would be to start by booting Chimpy from office, thus stopping new messes, and sending the correct message to future would-be dictators.

2. It's a cautionary warning
He's right about a lot of things. While Bush may be the lamest of lame ducks, he will still have a lot of power, and this election will only mark the beginning of the new Liberal resurgence. The first inning in the proverbial Whole New Ballgame.

I do disagree with him on his position that electoral politics is all. We Democrats can "change the basic direction of the country". But it won't be done all at once, in the context of a single election.

November 7th is the beginning. Our victories will be taken over the next several elections and across dozens of issues. And we will still have a tremendous amount of Republican neo-Con momentum to deal with. I think that's Feldman's main point. The future may be ours, but it won't necessarily be easy.
