Desperate Republicans resort to dirty tactics

Facing a growing Democratic threat in mid-term elections, Republicans are spending millions of dollars in a last-ditch smear campaign to turn voters in the crucial Midwest swing state of Missouri.

Four or more times an hour, the Democrat candidate, Claire McCaskill, is pilloried in Republican television adverts as a tax-dodging incompetent who has turned a blind eye to drug abuse among her subordinates.

One includes the line: "I think Claire McCaskill is a liar. Claire McCaskill will do whatever it takes to get elected. She'll lie and she'll cheat."

Once seen as unassailable in the Senate, Republicans now fear they are within one seat of losing their majority.

On Saturday night around 1 a.m., I saw a car without lights pulled over to the shoulder of Route 208 between Wyckoff and Franklin Lakes. I saw a darkened figure pulling out signs for Paul Aronsohn (democratic candidate for District 12) and putting them into his opened car trunk. Three days before, Route 208 had sporadic signs for Aronsohn. Now I saw a plethora of Scott Garrett (incumbent, R-NJ) signs along with Tom Kean, Jr. (for governor).

It's come down to this.

The Allen/Webb ads are getting nastier and nastier. Same with the Cardin/Steele ads.
