First, I'm excited about Obama's possible candidacy, and would like to see him run for President. I think he's a winner! I, however, am open and positive toward other candidates. If a stronger partisan here would like to spearhead this effort, I would welcome that.

We need ten responses to this thread by donating DU members WHO AGREE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GROUP, in order to submit a request to the administrators. We also need a mission statement to submit.

I think it would be a good idea, if, when you respond, you consider offering suggestions for the Barack Obama Group's mission statement. (Or if someone would like to submit a draft, please do!) I've looked at all other candidate's mission statements, and one decision appears to be whether to welcome only Obama supporters, creating a "safer" environment for discussion, or whether to be open to non-supporters. The mission statements are a brief paragraph or two in length, and simply stated.

I do think he and his supporters deserve a seperate forum.

My attitude toward his candidacy right now is pretty much the same as yours, DeepModemMom.

We could say, in the mission statement, something about how the group is for DU'ers who are open to and positive about the idea of his candidacy, but not necessarily committed to him yet in the primary.

I don't see a purpose for having a separate group if it's open to anybody. Might as well just keep posting in the general political threads if we want to get in arguments with all the naysayers.

The mission of the Barack Obama Group is to discuss this rising star in the Democratic Party and to share news and information about his life, career and political future. DUers who are supporters of Senator Obama for President, or have a positive view of the Senator and are open to an Obama candidacy in 2008 are welcome.

Your mission statement looks good to me. Thank you for going to the trouble to arrange all this. I'm looking forward to more discussions.

I like the phrase ...positive view of the Senator....which should discourage negative statements like those running crazy through the GD threads.

I don't know for sure that I'll vote for Obama in primaries IF he runs -- got to see how all the choices stack up first. But I definately like Obama. I'd love to participate.

I was an active Clark volunteer in '04 -- love him! I'm interested in the futures of both these great candidates.

About the Forum: the proposal, I think, will be submitted to the admins tonight, after everyone's had today to respond to the mission statement. Then I don't know what happens after the proposal is submitted, but, I expect, we'll soon know. Thanks again for your enthusiastic support!
