Obama: "I inhaled"; "More grounded in evolution than angels"

Barack Obama: 'I Inhaled — That Was The Point'

"I inhaled — that was the point."

That was what Illinois Senator Barack Obama, currently on a book tour that may or may not segue into a run for the 2008 presidency, said to New Yorker editor David Remnick this afternoon at the American Magazine Conference, after Remnick asked Obama whether or not his admission of drug use in the book would become problematic if he does, if fact, run for president.

The softspoken Obama, who during an appearance on Meet The Press yesterday admitted he would consider a run for the White House, openly criticized the Bush administration in front of 500 or so magazine executives during a wide-ranging, 45-minute discussion, occasionally with Remnick's prodding. "This is the most ideologically driven administration in my memory, so obstinate in resisting facts, dissenting opinions ... with a set of preconcieved notions." Obama said. "I think this administration has done great damage to this country."

"I wouldn't fit in with this administration (because I think) actually being informed is a good basis for policy," Obama said to laughter. "OK, that's a low-blow."...

Remnick, who at this point could be considered the President of the United States of Magazines, forced Obama to address the topic of religion. "It's not 'faith' if you are absolutely certain," Obama said, noting that he didn't believe his lack of "faith" would hurt him a national election. "Evolution is more grounded in my experience than angels."

Throughout the interview, Obama expressed doubt about his willingness to put his family through the scrutiny of a presidential race. "My wife would be leading the bandwagon for me to be running for president ... if I was married to someone else."...

2. The difference between Clinton and Bush...
...is that Clinton never inhaled, and Bush never exhaled.

3. Pass the bong this way!
:smoke:

Of course Obama is going to run, but I expected more of him at this point in his Senate tenure. I'll still consider voting for him, but I have no faith in the general public to elect a black man President.

6. Seems to me
That those who wouldn't vote for a black man aren't likely to vote for a Democrat anyway. Don't ya think?

4. The only thing that could sway my support for Obama
is if he didn't run in 2008. We need him now, and while he's perfectly free to place family first, I want to support a candidate who is so passionate about changing this country and its place in the world that he wouldn't turn down this rare opportunity which he has now. Even if he has to make personal sacrifices to do so.

I love Gore and like Warner ok, but neither one of them has stepped up to the plate. If Obama doesn't do so, I think the only candidate we'd have who is likely to beat Romney is Evan Bayh, and he's basically a Republican. So it is essential that Obama rise to the occasion.

for the Group will be submitted, following DU rules, to the site administrators. Then I think we wait to hear from them. Several other candidates have Groups already, which can be found on the "lobby" page.

Thanks for your help and support!

ON EDIT: I noticed I misspelled your name -- and have corrected!

11. What planet are you on?
Romney has a snowball's chance in hell of obtaining the Republican nomination in the first place, and Evan Bayh is not even close to the only man who can beat him.

13. I disagree
"Romney has a snowball's chance in hell of obtaining the Republican nomination in the first place"

I disagree. Allen has imploded, McCain is hated by most of the Republican base and his "send more troops to Iraq" plan won't even work in that party. Giuliani is possible, but I think he's too moderate for them. So who's left?

I don't underestimate Romney- any Republican who can win in Mass. has to have something on the ball. I don't see the Mormon issue as being a big one because the Republicans will realize that he's their best shot to win.

14. Newt Gingrich
And being from Massachusetts, Romney won because our candidate sucked. Plus, Bay Staters are more prone to splitting their government between parties. We understand one-party rule isn't usually a good idea.

As far as the Republicans are concerned, he's already been dissed by the fundies (Dobson won't support him) because he's a Mormon, and quite frankly, most rank-and-file would rather vote for a Southern Democrat than anyone from Massachusetts (aka, by them, "People's Republic of Taxachusetts"). Finally, there's a reason he didn't run for re-election - because there's no chance in hell he would've won. He is not well-liked within the state.
