'Mountain Values' give Democrat ex-football star a winning edge
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/10/28/wus28.xml

Democratic candidates in America's mid-term elections are embracing conservative values to mount a serious challenge in districts that have been solidly Republican for decades. Leading the charge is a former professional footballer, Heath Shuler, who is running for Congress in the Smokey Mountain region of North Carolina.

Mr Shuler wears a huge gold ring, breeds Labrador retriever gun dogs and owns a hunting business. It is an unusual spread of interests for a Democrat but his background has put Mr Shuler in a position to gain a seat for his party in the next Congress.

For his electorate, Mr Shuler has shaped a personal political philosophy: Mountain Values. "My mother always told me to make every decision as if she was standing over me, because if she wasn't somebody higher will be," he said. "When I get to Congress I will vote as if my constituents are standing over me."

It is formulation that not only emphasises family values, but performs the useful trick of signalling his independence from his party leadership, something a Democrat often has no choice about in staunchly Republican areas.

1. Holy Shi-ite! I'd like the see the Repugs try & top this:

Who is this hunk and why haven't I heard about this before?????? (I don't watch football, so...)

If we can lure back the old style Democrats (minus the bigots who we don't want anyway), there will be no stopping us. I honestly think this is a movement that is bigger than all of us. It is like a force of nature and we couldn't stop it if we wanted to.

I welcome him into the fold. The hunks just keep on a-comin,' don't they? I mean, have you noticed how many Democrats are just oh so sexy? Oh man!

3. Heath Shuler was a QB God at UT, and is very popular in Tennessee, and...
...Western Carolina. He was supposed to be the next great QB coming out of college, but fizzled in the pros. If he can get us this seat, the more, the better.

4. Heath is ahead in the polls
by about 3 points I think, over the repug incumbent, Charles Taylor. You would not believe the distorted junk mail ad campaign Taylor's gang is using against Heath Schuler. I get one piece of full color dogshit desperately spun campaign vomit from the repug campaign office every day in my mailbox. Still, it seems Heath has a good chance to replace the corporate cronie incumbent.

I met Heath Schuler at the recent festival at the Campbell Folk School in my little corner of North Carolina. He is indeed the kind of person we need now more than ever in Congress.
