Oh that narsty Left-Wing Press:
Proof the Mainstream Media Is Left Wing
Wednesday, November 01, 2006

By John Gibson

I have long thought the mainstream media is decidedly left wing. Now there's proof.

The Center for Media and Public Affairs did an accounting of the network newscasts from September 5 thru October 22 and found an overwhelming liberal bias.

On the "Big Three" network newscasts, the audit showed a clear jihad against the Republican Party. Only 12 percent of election stories that aired on NBC, ABC, or CBS could be regarded as remotely "favorable" to Republicans.

In contrast, as The Washington Times put it this morning, "Democrats basked in glory." The study showed that 77 percent of news accounts in the six-week period offered favorable evaluations of Democratic candidates and lawmakers.

Robert Lichter, director of the CMPA, said: "The numbers are pretty striking. The coverage has become a referendum on Republican leadership."

(Suggested alternate title: More Proof the Truth has a Liberal Bias") --Note that he's complaining about NEWS STORIES, not editorials.

2. Damn that liberal media
Edited on Mon Nov-06-06 11:22 AM by EarlG
I suppose in Gibson's "fair and balanced" world, the media should make sure that every story about Mark Foley sending porno emails to underage congressional pages should be balanced with a positive story about what a great guy he is. And every story about the Bush administration putting nuke secrets online should be balanced with a positive story about how helpful it was. And every story about Ted Haggard should be balanced with a positive one about the benefits of meth use.

Etc., etc., etc., etc...

This is just like their whining about Iraq. "Why oh why isn't the liberal media reporting all the good news coming out of Iraq?" Well... because there isn't any.

3. You can't report lots of positive stories IF THERE ARE NONE
WTF? This ain't rocket science! I can hear the cons now..."Where are all those positive stories about the kids GOP Congressmen DIDN'T molest? Where are all the stories about the countries the United States DIDN'T invade? Where are all the stories about the people Abramhoff DIDN'T bribe? Where are all the positives stories about the advisers Bush DID listen to? Where are all the stories about all the seniors who LOVE donut holes?

Fuckin' liberal media!

8. Nobody would read them, anyway.
Study after study has shown that people simply don't pay attention to "positive" news.

As a matter of fact, the news media DOES do A LOT of positive news coverage - but no one remembers it because, well, no one pays attention to it.

5. Here's a scoop, John!
There's a reason why people are pissed off, and it's not because of the "liberal media".

9. The GOP is down in every poll
The president's approval ratings are just above freezing, and Gibson complains that the good news fo the GOP isn't being reported. What good news might that be? The 200 members of the Republican caucus who aren't resigning (yet) or under indictment (yet)? All those Republicans who haven't molested 16-year-old boys?

Sheesh.

Reminds me of a story some years ago about a sports franchise. The owner of the team wanted to fire his radio broadcast team because in the first quarter of a game, they had only made a couple of positive references to the team. The station went back to its recording of the game, and the team was blown out in the first quarter, something like 25-8. What could the announcers, no matter what kind of homers they were, really say positive about that? By the same token, considering the train wreck that the Republicans were from 9/5 through 10/22 (and I wonder why Gibson chose just those dates, and not a wider sampling?), what could the media have possibly reported on that was positive for the GOP? Denny Hastert coming out of his hidey hole and seeing his shadow?
