Bush lied to Russert about discretionary spending
Edited on Sun Feb-08-04 08:04 PM by phunktify
How can our President just lie blatantly like this. Thanks to Dana Milbank from the WA Post for pointing this out(Milbank is apparently a real annoyance to this administration).

Bush said critics, including conservatives, are "wrong" to say he has not kept control of the federal budget. "If you look at the appropriations bills that were passed under my watch, in the last year of President Clinton, discretionary spending was up 15 percent, and ours have steadily declined," he said.

Federal discretionery spending has grown by more than 25 percent in the past two fiscal years, following average annual increases of 2.4 percent in discretionary spending in the 1990s.

Confounding President Bush's pledges to rein in government growth, federal discretionary spending expanded by 12.5 percent in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, capping a two-year bulge that saw the government grow by more than 27 percent, according to preliminary spending figures from congressional budget panels. The sudden rise in spending subject to Congress's annual discretion stands in marked contrast to the 1990s, when such discretionary spending rose an average of 2.4 percent a year.

Welcome to DU....good post.

see also another lie...

Several times during the exchange the president said that he had released his military records back in 2000.

That's not true. He's never released those records. And no one disputes that.

5. Milbank is a velvet hammer.
His work has absolutely no attitude (unlike the reporting on Clinton and Gore), but he is truthful. Just the facts, ma'am.
